How are automatic transmission shifts controlled?
I have been having trouble with my trans shifting. I have consulted some people and they all suggest adjusting the TV cable and checking vacuum. I have adjusted the TV cable, both by the books method and by the popular method on these posts, but still doesnt work. Where is this vacuum line located?
thanks!
thanks!

Shifts are controlled by line presures in the valve body- Tvcable is what regulates the line pressure- many other things are what determine the set pressure range that is controlled, such as the servo, torque convertor, acculator valve, governor and how the valve body is routes (meaning 7vane,10,13). Shifting can go eratic if the vlave body has debris in the solinoid vanes causing something to stick, etc. Most likely time for a rebuild.

Yeah, there's no vacuum operated solenoid on our 700r4 transmissions.
Erratic shifting could also be traced to an engine that's in need of a tuneup. I had erratic shifting a few years ago, couldn't trace it; engine was in tip-top shape, I figured the trans was bad. (It is, and has been bad for a while, but...) Anyway, I rebuilt the distributor as a matter of course; and guess what- the trans acted much better.

I found a black hard plastic line going towards the tranny on the passengers side. I followed it and it went above the tranny, but I couldnt follow it after that. What is it?
It seems to be shifting way too late. Also I seem to have no power. It takes forever to gain any speed (feels like I am pushing 35).

Does it seem to rev up abnormally high during acceleration?
Sounds like low line pressure to me. Be careful in raising it. Raising it too much too quickly will blow the seals in your transmission if it has been run for some time on low pressure. Try to do it gradually...and mark on the cable where the old adjustment was, just in case you add pressure and it starts acting worse, you can reset it to where it was before.

Are all those other hard black plastic lines (under the throttle body and on passenger side) vacuum lines?
I checked both the Chilton and Hynes manuals to find vacuum routing and other than the one posted on the hood, I couldnt find any diagrams.
If they are, how would I go about testing the vacuum on them?
