worth it?
im looking at buying a 1985 firebird 2.8 V6 the guy said he wants $500 for it and it runs every day only problem is that the paint is peeling because that year GM skipped a step in the paint processes on the blue and grey cars. He got a new saturn ion and for some reason said he wants to get rid of his bird now so u think its worth it? ill be the only one at school with one

First decide what you want for the car. If you want a nice looking reliable car, than yeah I'd buy this car if it i mechanically sound. Be sure to carefully look over the body, especially wheel wells and floor pans. Check for sagging door hinges. 500 for the car, later on a grand or two for a paint job and you got a real nice car.
But if its power your after, you're better off saving your green and looking for a v8.

accords no, they're faster than us, their engines are better than ours, etc....civics, hope he's got a full car and an automatic, if you've got a stick you've got the advantage, same time though ,i've beat civics, and been beat by civics, it's just a matter of luckand driver normally with that car, and who's got more mods...welcome tothe boards, and hopefully you'll join the 85 club.

It depends on the condition of your car's engine and their car's engine. Most kids couldn't keep an engine in tune to save their life, but they're quick to throw on a big fart can exhaust and shiny 20 inch wheels (extra weight!). Those are the guys you'll beat.
Keep the racing to the track... that's best because you get proof- a timeslip.

Actually I've even seen a decently modded civic still turning 18.6 at its best.. 5 spd, cat-back, "Cold" (*cough*hot) air, full suspension (Since when do they make Konis for civics?!), 17s (so he lost a tenth or two there) on a '99 with a D16Y7.. 'course this was all before the turbo.. my v8 won't hang with him now unless I 'decide' to race him while he's not paying attention and is low on revs/boost and call him beat before I get too far into third (And believe me, I did it.. once.. just to say I beat him.. and never gave him a chance to redeem himself. Just can't let the honda win).. otherwise he'll cream me with 3 passengers (It's sick, I was one of those 3 passengers against a v6 le baron.. all four of us were just laughing and shouting "FOUR PEOPLE!!" out the window as we passed him. later that night we noticed the turbo flange was cracked and had been leaking exhaust for some time.. so this whole thing happened at about 3-4 psi instead of 10.. not right.)
At any rate, it depends on the civic.

Just remember when you pay only 500, you get a 500 dollar car.
Someone mentioned floor and door pins. Well for 500 dollars you can expect the drivers door to sag and there to be a hole here or there. Just look for big problems.
Example, why is there a big puddle of oil under it. Or why is there no wheel well on this side.
Get my idea, if the hole is 1-2 inch round its fixable. Same as the paint its fixable. If where the paint peeled is all rust covered and pin holey and you want something better, then maybe wait and look for a 1000-1500 dollar car.
I am on car #4 of my life now (oldsmoblie, Firebird, Sunbird, Civic)
and when I paid 500 for my sunbird and oldsmobile, I had to put quite a bit in to keep it running.
Myself if I saw a 500 dollar firebird I would jump at the chance to get it. But I would make sure I have another 500-700 ready to put into tune-up, tires, repairs like that so it would be a good car. Not just a car that starts, but a car that runs well.
