Commercially available Y pipe

This is duplicated in the Tech/General Engine board, but I figured I'd put it in here too just because.

I dont know if this is old news to you guys or not, but I figure I'll post it anyways. I was on the boards for a while and heard that a performance Y pipe wasnt available for our cars, that it had to be custom made. Well, Heddman has one out now. Jegs carries it for $99.99, part number 500-17470. If everyone and their grandma knows this already, then my apologies.

Later!

Does anyone know if this will fit the hedman headers that they used to make for V6's?

Not even close.
That y-pipe is only made for the Hedmann V8 shorty style headers. It will not bolt on to a V6 stock exhaust manifold without extensive modification- would be cheaper to have one made from scratch.

No stock style (side outlet) y-pipe will work with Hedman or hooker V6 headers- I own both sets and know 100% for certain. The y-pipe would have to be routed stright back underneath the transmission- no ground clearance, especially for a lowered car.

My apologies then! Mods, feel free to lock this.

So what are you saying agood? Which y-pipes will fit the headman headers for the 2.8? I did not understand your answer.

I think hes saying that there aren't any aftermarket y-pipes that will fit, and for that matter I didn't think there were any aftermarket ones period.

The stock y-pipe routes under the motorpan just behind the k-member(from driver's side) then turns back and meets with the pass side droping down at a slight rear angle. They meet and turn outward towards the pass side of the car just behind the RF tire and then turn towards the rear connecting to the cat- See pic of proper y-pipe routing below(dumps to the side behind the RF tire)

Hooker and hedman headers come off the motor and dump towards the rear of the car- they come out too far back in the vehicle- not able to route a y-pipe over to the right side of the car where exhaust ground clearence was designed into the chassis. With them, a true shaped y-pipe will have to be made paralelling the lower than sides of the transmission and then merged together near the driveshaft front yoke area under the center of the car. There is no room for ground clearence there, especially if the car is lowered. Stock height car will still ground out- look under your car in this area, you'll be able to clearly see the problem. Would be better to just run duals to the rear, but even that is difficult and mainly not promising for the little displacement V6's. Its best to run the long tube type uncorked (full race), thats why I am keeping my sets.

Pictured are drivers side headers from left to right- Hooker, Hedman, and PFE

this is my y-pipe on my 3.1. i know its kinda hard to see in the pics, if you want different angles, let me know and i'll see what i can do. it does not bottom-out. there are a couple of scratches on it but not hardly noticeable. some of the scratches are from sliding it when i take it out at the track or when working on the car. note - tranny crossmember was motified but anyone with any welding experience can do the same as i did with no problem.

edit: that has hooker long tube headers (super comps). and, it was custom made, it is not mass produced anywhere. no cats does help too.

I could never come close to running that setup. My car scraps as it is on the contact points shown below- The right most side is lowest point of car (yellow curve) less than 4" off the ground at ride height- that pipe would give me about 1-2" max clearance there even if I hacked that crossmember off.

i don't think you could run an exhaust setup like mine with the setup you have but my exhaust is higher than your 'yellow points'

Not on the right side (I drew the line curve a little lower than the actual brace) Your Exhaust tube runs underneath the two crossmember mount bolts (3" pipe + 1/4" min clearence below bolts)- I'd have about an 1 1/2" clearence at best at stardard ride height on a smooth road.

You can see for reference that my hand sits well higher than the brace and even the frame rail . (The car is lifted on the right side about 1" so I can get under it for the picture)
