Running rough and hot

Just tonight, my car started running VERY rough, like it has a gigantic cam in it. It also smells more like gas than normal sometimes. The engine was getting exceptionally hot today as I had to turn on the heater and put it on high to keep it below 220.
It's got a full tune-up aside from the pcv valve (can never find it). I am thinking it is either the alternator or the ICM at this moment. I think it may be the alternator because it is making a wierd noise and my dash lights dimmed sometimes.

Could be the ICM because I recently installed a new distributor, and to me the symptoms almost seem like the timing is off.

Any other leads that I should follow??
Which one seems like a better start?

While you're at it chack all vacuum lines for cracks & worn hoses.
That's a free fix & GREAT gains back in performance.
