Distributor Rebuild Question
Distributor Rebuild Question
I’m about to replace the ICM and pick-up coil on my ’90 3.1 and was wondering about the following procedure:
I’m not planning on pulling the distributor during this repair (so spinning the distributor gear by hand is not possible, I'm planning to just use a remote switch & "tap" the starter) ‘cause I really need to get this thing running ASAP but I’m planning to do it in the future.
My questions are:
1) What’s a good ballpark figure to use with the feeler gauge? (.050 .075 .1 etc.) since I won't be able to feel the magnetic pulses.
2) What part do I actually bend to get the right clearance, is it the pole piece??
3) Will the distributor shims for a Small Block Chevy work for this application? I’ve tried to get some for a 3.1 from the local parts stores and they don’t list them. (This is for future use, when I actually do pull the distributor.)
ThanX for the help

Before you do so, spin the distributor gear; it'll probably spin without resistance. Then adjust the gap. Then spin the distributor gear again- you should "feel" the magnetic pulses very strongly; meaning, you "helped" by fixing the gaps.

Thanks for 1 & 2, as far as the shims, they are used between the gear & housing to remove end play. I've done that before on the Small Blocks & from reading previous posts I know some of the board members have done it to their 60° V6's. I just can't find anyone locally that has them for the 60° V6's.
