Would I benefit from a CAI?
I have a '91 Camaro RS. I was searching the boards and was thinking about doing a homemade CAI. However, I was wondering if I would actually benefit from one. Everyone's stock air box looks more constrictive than mine. I have the circular canister. However, on the side of the canister is a ~ 2.5" wide oval intake that extends 5" towards the passanger fender. I don't know if this is the standard box that everyone is upgrading from (the only camaro I've known is my own), but it doesn't look very constrictive, plus that "snorkel" or whatever it is has the stock setup drawing cold air from farther away from the engine than a CAI would.
My question, is that "snorkel" anything special that I have, or is the stock intake that everyone gets and therefore I should do a CAI?

Thats the standard 3.1l canister intake.
Myself installed a 2.8 dual snorkle intake on mine, and installed some 3" exhuast pipe in place of where the maf goes on the 2.8.
Gains, no clue, I bought my car needing lots of repairs, it was also missing the stock intake pipe.

A true CAI will help, but the K&N filter under the hood is not a CIA. You must take air directly from out side the car and feed it into the engine, with no gaps or cracks.
A true CIA is worth it, hands down. Most of the other under the hood mods are for looks. They can help it breath more but still hot crapy air.

Actually, now that I've searched the boards some more, it seems that putting in a dual snorkel would yield the same improvement as a CAI. And I think it would look much better than any Home Depot Speed Shop fabrication I could do. Guess I should start looking at EBay...

Here is my SLP CAI... The entire side towards the fender is open to bring in cold air through the fender.
No home depot here..... but $$$...

Does anyone have any info on the difference between a 2.8L/IROC dual intake box vs. open element vs. our stock canister?
I definately want to improve my intake over the stock canister. Will the dual filter box do that for me? Or would the improvement only be marginal compared to an open element?

dual intakes is useless on a 2.8 , but it is cool. It can't suck that much air to make two $50 filters worth it. Your still sucking hot under hood air. You need a true CAI or atleast get the filters in front of the radiator.
It also depends on you. Some people rather have it fancy looking than have the best function and others will use old sewer pipe to gain every advantage.
I got 68 Firebird ram air scoops in my hood. Use hi temp dryer hose and made a manifold that's siliconed to my hood.

So, just to be clear, I have a 3.1L with the stock air canister. I'm wondering if getting the intake box that sits around the hood latch would give me better air flow or if that also is too restrictive and I should go with a PVC & open element intake.
This is PART of my 1985 Stock Firebird Hood Cold Air Intact set up.
I plan on changing this design shortly due to replacing front nose on car & adding correct deleted body panels.
But adding the more outside cold air to the 3.4 mill really woke it up! Especially at freeway speeds. Around town no difference.
Whatever version ya create, it's gonna help!
