Mechanical Redline
Well, the 5000 RPM redline I've got on my tach is nice and all.. but I'm fairly certain it's linked to the NA cam specifications... problem is, my powerband is now from 3500-6000... so.. what's our mechanical redline?
When will the lifters give up? When will the bottom end give out.. only info based on solid data, please...

was always pretty sure my engine didn't redline till soemthing lcoser to 6k, but i'm not 100% on that...on the contrary, ur springs won't destroy at 6.5 k rpm, probalby won't won't at 7 either...but at the same itme, ifyou were holding say, 4k all day long, then u might have issues. depends on how long, what load, etc.

lets say this, i know my tach is off somewhat but one day, two different times, i accidentally laid my tach on the 7,000 mark. once was on the street just playin around, or trying to show off a little, and holding it in each gear manually. then, later at the track with the slicks on it, came out of the water box and nailed the gas and accidentally hit 7,000 again. didn't hurt the motor any all though i don't plan on doing it too often for fear of hurting something. i don't see 4k being much of an issue as mentioned above, with my 4.10 gears, i cruise at about 3k or a little over @ 70mph

well, according to my clackalations, I have no reason to go past 5800.. I've got full boost at 3500+.. 1st@5K -> 2nd@3k, and I still retain boost, so 1st at 5500+ should put me right into my 2nd power band. Just trying to keep in mind my bottom end is already taking alot more abuse than it's used to at the moment

Stock everything, with 100k+ miles, I wouldn't put her to the upper side of 5k more than necessary.
Rebuilt 3.1 sees 6k, no problem, right where the cam levels out. It's nice.
I'm building mine so that 6k is max power, 6300 rpm limiter will stay.

How much exta HP do you think your running???
There was that guy with the 100,000 miles plus 2.8 with a 100hp shot of NOS for 4-5 years with no problems??? He had the mustang 5.0 kit.
If a "old" 2.8 and take a 100hp NOS shot for more than a few runs why would some boost be a problem???
I have no idea so that why I'm asking.

What bugs you about the stock 2.8, Doward.. the bottom end, the springs/lifters, or something else?
It's not so much the HP as the torque.. My estimates have me putting down 200-220ft-lbs from 3500-5000.. and my butt-dyno tends to agree with those estimates.
Nitrous is usually worse, since it's a static hp value.. 100 shot of nitrous @ 3000 rpm = 175 ft-lbs of torque over whatever the engine was producing.. so roughly about 300 ft-lbs on a 2.8. Nice to hear that car lived through those antics.. helps me sleep at night

Not the stock anything - just the wear on a 100k+ mile OHV engine
Let's face it, not many of us buy these used, and the 2.8 was 'babied'
