Pressure regulator removal

What is the procedure on how to remove the fuel pressure reg from the fuel rail on an 88 V6? The book says that it's a permanent part of the fuel rail and that it's not servicable. Is there an insert that goes into the main reg body thats replacable?

I know that Auto Zone carries a replacment, I cannot see that one would have to buy the whole unit [rail] in order to change it.

There are 6 torx bit screws with a little nipple (tamper-proof) in it holding the cover on. Remove the cover and replace the diaphram. I believe they are something like a #8 or #10 torx. You can buy the bit at AutoZone. The only part that you need to replace is the diaphram and spring (one piece) that is sold at AutoZone for about $24.95 The part number is GP- Sorenson 800 122. When you put it back together, the torque on the screws is 14 inch pounds.

Totally off topic but you mention the torque settings on the blots.

I wonder when they will force metric torque wrenches on to people? They push metric like crack. Places in Canada get fined for not adopting the metric system.

Well Gumby,

If you really want to get technical about it, the torque value in metric is roughly 1.5 Nm. To find the metric settings on a torque wrench, just look on the reverse side of the torque wrenchs body. It will have the metric values listed on one side and standard on the other.

I forgot to ask:

Does the fuel system have to be de-pressurized before removing the diaphram?

Yes, it would definitely be good to do that. Remove the gas cap and you can depressurize the rail by holding a shop towel over the schraeder valve and depressing the needle valve in it..
