Raced a ford focus 03' se

Off the line, im gone, i take him all the way up to 60 mph, at 70 mph were neck an neck, he slowly passes me after that, i mean slowly. He has an intake in his car, i dont know what else hes done to it, but all that means to me is i won from 0-60 but not the quarter. After that i took my car on the highway, and lost a ttop, whenever you hear your car "falling apart" its probably your ttop coming off, no one got hurt behind me, and luckily i had a spare set at my house.

just curious, do you still have the sharp bend on you maf? i cut the bend off mine but left the screen because it straightens the air flow for the sensor. or did yours even have the bend.

Also are you running a straight pipe exhaust? someone on here said once they tried that and it ran like "poop"

Loose the t-tops next time...

Sounds like a pretty even match. next time drop the weight of the t-tops when you go for a race. If you can, drop all of the extra weight. Unfortunately, our motors have a really crappy power curve (good torque is low in the band, usable horsepower is high in the band). I'd kill for a broader torque curve...

drop teh weight of the t-tops, but gain extra drag . Take a weekend & remove all teh padding/insulation from under your carpets. "Hidden" weight loss

maybe we should face fact, that the "new" generation of import type cars will kick our butts...

i'm w/ project on this one...do not lose your t-tops, as the weight of the t-tops isn't particularlly bad, infact the loss of aerodynamics will be so dramatic that you'll really have more trouble than gain...especially above eh, 50 or so mph.

Imports? Hell a STOCK v6 3rd gen would have a hard time beating a newer mini van!

new mini vans might be able to beat a stock 3rd gen in the 1/4, but i'll always love the mighty gm 60* v6.

Make plastic T-tops, I made my hatch window out of Plexiglas. I wouldn't race without t-tops beyond 60MPH wind resistance is 4 times stronger.

What do focus's have I4? I think if I had an exhaust system on my car, I would have spanked him.

I wonder how he shifted and what gear it was in. Should of shifted manually and spanked him. Full revs.

When it comes to street racing I find that is what wins. People wont go full rpm's in each gear. They just mash it and go. street racing is nothing like 1/4 where a peak shift is better.

to brobert and v6sucker

MY car ain't losing to no import (unless it's running boost or more than 4 cylinders.) A chick traded in her 99 eclipse today, it's got exhaust and some rims, but other than that it's stock. I'm gonna race my boss in thaT (ME IN MY V6 MARO). I'll be taking his hundred bux by at least 5 car lengths.... Some imports are fast, you just need the right toys to keep up...

our little 6's are 130-160 hp stock.
Imports are coming 180 hp and up AND weigh less.
Hmmmm
Doesnt take genius to figure this one out
Not saying our 6's will lose to everything, some cars are parked. They have 4 clys out with more power then our 6's AND they weigh less.
Not that im in any hurry to get ridd of my 3rd, id never sell it.

Horsepower ain't where it's at

I don't know of many with that kind of power (2.2 140hp, Sentra SE-R 150 hp Civic Si 135hp ) Those are the enemy. That's about as new as they come I think (those are dyno numbers from Modified Mag). We may be heavier, but we've got the torque to get us moving alot faster. Most 4-cylinder motors don't make horsepower until about 5000rpms. So, when you race an auto, you smoke him! Oh yeah, and Brobert, you'll have a pretty easy time with most when you do your swap too! lol. Then all you need is an extra 400 bux, and you can buy a bottle.

Naw he needs a tune up or the ability to face the fact the engine is tired. My sister in law has a focus se slowest pile of junk. My brothers 95 3.4 camaro will leave the focus like its tied to a pole and thats a heavy 110k car that would blow the focus even when he had the auto.

Id suguest you do a TomP tune up then try again.

We are also talking street racing, lots of car that should win the 1/4 mile lose on the street as its a 1/2 mile or longer race, usually who ever gives up first loses.

thats kinda messed up, but expected, I hate fords and my dad just bought a ford ranger.

I told him for like weeks that he should get a dodge, but he said they were too expensive

I have told him hes going to regret it later

not sure about the bend you mean, the only thing i did to my maf was remove the "honeycomb" screen. i'll have to look at it later but i dont think mine has one. Im running stock pipe to cat with stock pipe back but no muffler. it runs fine and has a nice sound to it, sounds better than when i had a dynomax muffler, but im pretty sure im actually losing horsepower from not having a muffler but it's a nice exhaust note!

by the way, my car is decent up to 60mph then it just starts "taking its time" but it's still a fun ride should i say the least. still needs tons of work to make it faster and will come in the future.

Oh this is sortof related, cause it happenend to me, but I was in my Monte Carlo.

I was coming home 1 night with my friend in the car. and I came up to this stoplight, there was this Marine in this Miata, who thought his car was hot $hit. I couldnt let him think that, could I.
So when the light turned green he took off, I was like I just let him win this one, so I did. then when we got stopped at the next light he was really thinking he was the bomb, revving his enging and all, so I had to pound him now. He looked over as the light turned green, took off waved at me, and then I took off, as I passed him I waved at him and laughed.

it was good, I can say the best story I can tell about driving, for me.

Hey anyone here know what the redline for a 1984 model year 2.8 is? It's carbureted, if that makes any difference.

Yuck! A Dodge is even worse than a Ford.

As for beating the new little four-bangers... there's only so much you can do with a V6 that's not built on too much technology(unless you can rig up a cheap turbo set-up that is). You gotta go for an "exotic" V6 like the GN or the 3800, then show them who's boss.

no one mention these newer 4bangers being FWD...that's one advantage we have....traction. but there's not a whole lot of 4 bangers out there running N/A that'll pull me, especially on the street. i have a friend with an 01 focus, header, cams, intake (TB and cold air), full exhaust,... and a 5 speed, he won't race me on the street, he always says "na...that's alright" i've raced him at the track before and he was about .5 secs slower than me in the 1/8 mile. on the dyno, i think he showed like 175 hp to the wheels with all of the mods he has.
