do a full tuneup. then there's any number of things you can do. i'd personally recommend suspension.

75hp shot of nitrous is safest. some people have done 100hp shot, but that's pushing the envelope a little.

I don't know what your ability is, but a new timing chain, cam, and new rockers make a little difference....but obviously N2O is the "most bang for your buck"....might not be a good bang... j/k if nitrous is your thing, just do it right, and you'll probably be happy.

I would definitly do the tune up, then try making ur own CAI with a K&N filter. If u want some better flow, u dont have to go with a new catback, i recomend a cut out. If u dont have to worry about emmissions, i would pull the cat, and stick the cut out there. Ive done all that ive mentioned, and i can geat stock v-6 rustangs up to 2002. And all those mods help with MPG

ALso the cut out does sound good, even for our little 2.8s

at idle they sound like 305's

BTW if u got the $400-$900 for the motor and then a latter tranny rebuild, go with a 3.4l block out of the 93-95 F-bodies, 160HP with 190TQ, compared to the 135HP and 170TQ, and they have better TQ curves, read up on it, lots of info out

lifters? Never overrev an engine, although these little motors can take a helluva lot of abuse, but most liekly you gave urs a little to much...ps, no 40 series flowmaster. get a 80 series, made for the car, dual outlets, etc....and u'll like the sound....do a tune up, get it running well, someone else on here can help you get rid of ur knock, and have fun...and be safe.

over reved it that sucks

well anyways a cut out is basicly a new piece to ur system, its like a Y pipe with one pipe leading to the rest of the system, and the other ending in aobut 4" to a plate, when the plate is off, all back pressure at that point exits, along with a new sound to the car, u get better flow.

over-rev + mechanical knock = internal damage, 90% probability of a spun rod bearing.

Two options:
Rebuild the engine (bore .030 over, new pistons/rods, machine or replace crank (depending on degree of damage)). -- OR -- Replace engine with used long block (3.4 swap is best route in this case, since they're going to have the lowest miles)

Either way you've got $500-$2000 in damage, depending on how much labor you invest in it yourself. If you drive the car with that knock, you're likely to throw the rod through the oil pan within 5 miles and risk further damage to things outside the engine. I speak from experience on that.. gf's brother decided to drive his about a mile with a serious rod knock. (they were moving, needed to get the car to the new house) ... it moved about 300' before the knock went away, which was preceeded by a loud bang, some serious clunking, and a huge puddle of oil forming under the car.. amazingly, it made it to the new house on 5 cylinders with no oil. Needless to say, it's trashed.. 3.4 swap in progress, 2.8 coming out and 3.4 hopefully going in this weekend.

Flowmaster 80

@85f-bird:

I looked on the Flowmaster website and it says that the 80 series is for V8 applications only. Is this just a recommendation or is there something more to it?

not a recommendation, nor a anything else important. Its essentially mis-information. The flowmaster 80 series is designed to fit camaro and firebird exhaust systems, doesn't matter on the engine size. also, you can buy an entire flowmaster exhaust and bolt it up to your factory y-pipe if you wanted, (costs a lot) but it'd be mandrel bent. It's listed for the v8, but works just ifne on a six also...just be sure to get the right diameter inlet for ur application, think our pipes might be factory 2.25", think my new one is 2.5" .... 3" is considered 2 big, 2.5 might be also.

V6's will use the same exhaust pipe routing as a 305 (5.0) v8, engine codes H and E. And 85's right, for some of the v8 guys, 3 inch pipes are considered too big!

freestylin, that sucks about over-revving it. It might be pointless now, but you said the tailpipes were a little rusty- if they're not covered in rust, you could try some steel wool on them, and follow up with some aluminum or chrome polish. You'd be surprised how well they might come out! But the pipes can only have bits of rust, they can't be completely rusted.

And you probably got that 173 number because the 2.8 equals 173 cubic inches

Add the full on Street Legal Exhaust system from Pace Setter Exhaust
Contact fgerle@pacesetterexhaust.com for how soon public is able to purchase these pipes!
Pacesetter also has mufflers & the larger "I" pipe necessary to take advantage of what ya just installed.

ON your current engine, upgrade ignition sysytem from timing chain to coil to rebuild distributor. This gives back best results & performance & gas milage, all same time. All that stuff will swap to the 3.4 engine block when ya upgrade the powerplant. 3.4s available in 1993-95 (early until Jan production date) 4th Gen F Body.

Lots of good stuff for the dollar & effort coming down the restoration companies pipeline.

PS LEGAL Racing sure will be much more even matched after all this is done to your ride.
