Aftermarket Distributors
I have the need for an Aftermarket distributor, any available? I did a search and decided this way was easier...

I got mine at o'rileys, It was between 100-200 bux. This is with a new ICM, and possibly cap/rotor also.

That's weird... Dale, did they take your old one as a core? I remember the pics you put up of the new one (with the star wheel); doesn't seem like they used anything from the old piece. I wonder why they list a core charge. Maybe for "just" the distributor gear?
(I priced a new dist gear from GM a long time ago- like 5 years ago- and it was $40 for a new gear.)
Hmm.. I wonder if our gear is the same as a v8 gear.

Who is it made by?
Also, it seems like it would be kinda tricky pulling it out, has anyone done this? My whole problem is that I have a miss when the engine warms up, rather, it manifests itself when it warms up. I've replaced EVERY ignition componet aside from the distributor (Plugs wires cap rotor coil) and it still has a miss. I figure the dist is just crapped out, it is rather rusty in there....

You have two parts inside the distrib. 1 can be replaced w/o pulling distrib, just requires 7/32 socket, extension, and ratchet, and few select cusswords un-hooking the pickup from it w/o it snapping.
You have ICM, and pickup coil under that cap.
If its having misfits when warm, finger is usually pointed to either ignition coil, or ICM. Test/check/swap them first.

aftermarket one (like dale's) seems pretty cheap to me (compared to replaceing the parts to rebuild my 13 year old 0ne)...so why not put a brand new one in???
is there any reason not to use an aftermarket one?
PS...what does come with the cardone a-1 dist?? does it include the pick up coil and ICM?? thanks.
one more thing...(you would think i've been here to long to be this dumb) but how does a core charge work?

cardone came with ICM and pickup coil. Cant rem if it came with cap and rotor, sorry.
ICM=Ignition Control Module
core charge, its kinda like a deposit. You pay extra up front, when you take your old part(s) back with reciept, they give you the deposit back.

IMO??
Ign Coil, ICM, "possibly" but doubtfully pickup coil.
Check them before you buy new distrib. Testable with volt/ohm meter, and/or taking them to parts store (ICM has to).

They can be accessed
With the cap off? I guess I'll pull the module tommorow (although I've never seen one on other cars "start" to fail. Usually, they just stop working all together.

My car would sputter, then cut-out. Let it cool off, start it again and go a few miles, then same thing.
I replaced the Ignition coil, and ICM and it was fixed. Not sure which one it was.

Yep you can change it with the cap off, and the dist still in the motor. Its just harder to fit tools and your hands back there. I actually carry an old ignition module with me in my car, just in case! But the pickup coil needs the dist shaft pulled, so you need to yank the dist. (Remember 85-89 dists might come out easier if you unplug the cold start injector's connector!)
Thanks for that pic... looks like they probably could've re-used the dist body and ign module mounting plate, too.

Didn't the 94-95 Camaros come with 3 by 6 pack coils and DIS.
A guy could use the pick up from them and the 6-pack along with MSD DIS and really have a good system. No more distributor.
Finally ending the ICM death when you are going down the highway. (been there NOT fun)
MSD-6215
Not saying it would be easy, would have to study the diagrams and custum wire it up. 329 bucks isn't cheap either but you get all the features of a 6A box and DIS

ryan, you would have to install 2 crank sensors and cam sensor to get DIS hooked up. It still has an ICM on it, however TOTALY different and more expensive.
I wired one up, I know what it takes

I didn't say it was going to be easy OR cheap. But I think anything is better then that ICM thats on there now.
If the 3.4L came with it, it's just a matter of $$ and wiring it up.
You've done it so it can be done!
