Are they riveted or pressed in to the knuckle? I would look myself but er umm.. I seem to be sans one floor jack after I moved recently

Just curious, because I suspect my lower joint on the driver's side is kaput, and I dont really have the means to punch out rivets.

 

If you don't have a hydraulic press, it's kinda difficult to do. I imagine you could hit em good with a sledge to knock them out, but getting them back in is the hard part. A press is really the only way to go.

 

you can use a ball joint press and do them on the car. rivits can be cut, drilled or ground to remove, but you don't have rivits to worry about.

 

yes, that HUGE c-clamp looking thing. Not that hard to do, plus I think Harbor Freight is selling them for like $40 or so. Seen it somewhere. I scored mine as a damaged return from AZ. Took a dremel & cutting discs to fix the bad threads, he it ws good to go.

 

Yea, I know what you mean. I use one in the shop frequently. I wish I could just take my car there to do it.

On a tip from RBob, I smeared some anti-sieze on the new balljoint's flange where it pressed into the control arm. Lay down a lot of newspaper, you won't believe how much old grease is sitting up there!

I actually bought a balljoint press, got it for $100, and it was made by OTC. Lube up the threads with some plain 'ol engine oil to make things easier!

 

Autozone rents that bad boy out... Leave deposit, use it, bring it back, get your $$ back!

 

Yep, Pep Boys rents them out, too.
