got my heads off today

since my motor and tranny are shot, i decided to take the top end off the ol' 2.8, as i thought the problem is in the bottom end, i think i cracked off a connecting rod, cause when i turned it over by hand after she totally died i heard a piece of metal drop into the base pan.

If I'm seeing things correctly, 3 pistons are down, 2 up, and 1 part way up.

That means crank, or connecting rod

hey dale, looks like numbers 1 and 5 are up, along w/ number 4...that'd be 3, and not a broken crank or rods....86, did u know what was shot prior to the tear down?

Hmmm you heard something drop but things look right. maybe you cracked or broke a rod cap or cap bolt.

1 and 4 should be at the exact same point in their stroke... they are not... 2 and 5 should be also.. they do not appear to be... that's serious internal damage. RIP, little 2.8.

often it's plain amazing bropert....i remember when my engine was out being replaced w/ the new motor, seeing my lil six on the stand, stripped naked of all accesories, was litterally incredible. I couldn't imagine that something so small would move my ride...not wlel, but move it none the less.

why did ya take off the whole top of the engine if the engine and transmission are shot? just disconnect the trans crossmember and the manifolds and all the **** on top and take them both out at the same time. you can still do it now using a head bolt, for lift, but the manifolds might give ya a day cuz they are still on the y pipe

Because he wanted to. Many of us refuse to do such things without a good reason yet would really like to have a chance to tear our motor down... once the motor's trashed, there's no "can I put it back together?" to worry about.

Yup, in my old T/A, I tore apart the 400 so i could see how it all worked. Knowledge is power, & now he knows that much more about engines.

The cherry picker alternative , 1/2 way down.

Tearing down the motor in the car i seach persons perogitive. All depends on them. I removed majority of the 2.8 while still in the car because of a lack of cherry picker.

Gotta love the winch.. I'd love a rig like that with the winch set up to slide on rails...
