1989 Bird and VATS

Okay I am looking at getting a 1989 V6 stick firebird to go along with my 1984 bird. THe issue is that the 89 was broken into by amatuers trying to joy rod. They bent the hood and broke a taillight, no big deal. The issue is that they attempted to use a screw driver in the ignition to start the car.

How big a pain is it to replace the ignition and/or steering colum? I know the later 3rd gens have VATS in the colum somplace I jus donno that much about it. Can I just get a replacement colum from a junkyard and swap it out?

Can VaTS be bypassed easily?

Its a nice deal on a car owned by one older lady...too good a deal to pass up!!

Will be adding a decent after market alarm to replace the VATS when I can get it working...

What is the cost of the vats bypass then?
Granted this is IF I get the car, Ill know more tomarrow.

Unfortunately, thirdgen.org does not deal in vats bypass information.

TechSmurf is right Jurrell. Thirdgen.org's policy's regarding Vats information has changed. You may still do a search on the subject if you'd wish. We have however left this thread viewable instead of deleting it completely so that anyone wishing to help you may PM you. The policy as it stands now is that no new publicly viewable information will be covered.

And yes you can change the column as long as it's from a Vats car.

the Vats value is set in the ECM, not the column.
