I got the v6 out and guess what?

Massive 6 inch crack on the pass side of the block!

I see why i smelled coolant while driving now. It didnt shoot out unless i reved it high which i did on my way to the garage
The little 2.8 sounded like a demel.

Only had one broken part taking it out. That was the wiper motor. It got smashed, just the cover though.

I need a new coolant overflow can also. Mine has a small crack right by the hose.

Also the motor mounts are a PITA!!!!!!!!

I have little stuff to do now but the major stuff is over with.

So was it worth it? Id say yeah because i got the motor/trans and all the parts for pretty cheap. But if you want a v8 go buy a v8 car. Unless you REALLY REALLY like your car!!!!!

I still have the springs i had before in the car. The car doesnt sit low at all. Looks the same as it did before.

Let's see a pic of the crack. Mine was between the cylinders. Also, are you gonna keep ALL the A/C? as there is a shhesh load extra room w/it gone. I made/am making a custom a/c delte box. Still plenty of room to work and I get to see the whole motor (lets me laugh at 4th gen V6 peeps & pisses them off too )

I wish i had a pic of it but we didnt take one and the motor is gone, well the guy i got my v8 from has it. Ill see if its still there tomorrow. If it is ill take some pics.

All my ac stuff has been gone since the second week i had the car I do need an ac delete box though

The crack runs from front to back on the side of the block. It probably was like that since i bought it.

2.8 is tougher than than you think...

My 2.8 in my yellowmarow, sat for two years with a blown head gasket. i bought the car, towed it home and then changed the plugs, filter and oil and it started. Of course I made sure the colooing system was full but it started. And also, in 5 minutes the coolant and oil decided to make love. I replaced the intake gaskets, adjusted the valves, pulled the cam and timing gears. I found the lobe on the last, rear passenger side of the of the cam was getting coolant pissed on to it from the bad gasket. The lobe was gone. So with new lifters, cam timing chain, water pump and intake gasets, I rebuilt and fired up. This motor lasted 1200 miles before the already coolant damaged main bearings gave out. When I pulled out the motor and began my 3.4 swap, in the pan were shredded shavings of the the crank bearings. They looked like shavings from a drill bit gong through aluminium. The 2.8 is a well built motor in my opinion...... other than factory intake gaskets!!!

Im not a fan of the motor at all. I've had too many problems with it in too short of a time frame. It is surprizing it still ran like it did with the crack and it must have been overheatted ridiculously for it to crack that bad..

Also, oooooooooooooooooowwwwwwwwwwwchhhhhhhhhh.
Damn my sunburn and muscles hurt! Im not moving today

No wonder

No wonder Brobert has a grudge against the 2.8 . JK, take a picture of the crack man, I've never seen one actually run with that type of damage.

Yeah i was surprized when i saw it. it runs from front to back about 3 inches below the head. Coolant must have been shooting out of it for awhile. Must of only been cracked so coolant shot out? Its not wide but it is long as hell. Im staying in today. Im too sore to go walk around to take a pic of it, ill go tomorrow.

Congrats br()bert,

I know you had mentioned swapping out your 2.8. And that day finailly came. I might be bugging the crap out of you in future...I'm kinda looking into swapping out my 3.1 to either a 3.8 just even a 350..., I really dont know...but I do know that I'm keeping my car after all.

Well over all congrats and keep me posted on any mods as well as on how the swapping is turning out.

Take care bro....

Thanks man, any questions with the v8 swap i'll be glas to answer but if you go with the 3.8 i think Project would be the man to talk to. Either engine is a HUGE upgrade from the 3.1.

Makes me wonder what i'll find when i pull the 2.8 for a 3.4. I think i'll take it apart to check it out, then reassemble it to maybe use as a mockup for some kinda custom air intake.

going on 162,000 miles. about 60,000 was me. and about 15-18,000 was on german autobahns and hills.

but it still runs for now and gets 320miles to a tank.

Wow, that blows about the crack! (Pun intended) That's wild tho that it was still running!

I paid $180 for my V6 y-pipe back in 1997... got it at a local "real" auto parts store (not a chain store like Pep Boys, the kind with concrete floors and greasy counters with ashtrays and yellow'd parts books on 'em), it was made by AP Pipes, and was mandrel bent. $70 is a hellovalot better of a deal tho!

Yup and if it ever gets a hole in it i can take it back.

Id show you a pic of the hole but im on probation for posting the obvious, seems some people like living in a fantasy and dont like it when you post real world information.

My old motor is sitting on the ground around the corner, the trans is off it but the motor is still there. Anyone near philly want a cracked 2.8 can have it.
