To Swap or Not to Swap?

Hello everyone. I am anewbie at this site i've been reading the forums forever, and they really have helped me fix up my 3.1.
Now i have a problem. I have a 3.1. In my garage I have a cam, pulleys, rockers, and new valve heads. On the car I have a highflow cat, flowmaster catback, and an air intake. All the stuff was free seeing as i have connections.

Yesterday my step dad said he could get a free 350 TBI out of a 1993 GMC truck. It needs a rebuild and i would probably need a transmission that would work for a V8.

Now my question guys and gals, should i forget about my V6 and take on the swap? I really like my V6 and from my gut feeling it is going to be a PITA to drop that 350 in.

SO if you wonderful people would put in some feedback on my situtation i would greatly appreciate it.

can you afford gas at $2.00+ and also get 12MPG???

I hear fairy tails of 305s getting good mileage but you better be driving like a grandma, a 350 might get 18 if your real easy n careful. never use more than 1/4=1/2 throttle.

The bad gas mileage is a mith unless you drive at wot all the time.

Also do you have the money to get it rebuilt?

z28guy and I just did the v6 to v8 swap, the hardest problem is the motor mounts. Also theres a ton of people on here who have done the swap also. Pull the v6 motor and trans together. take out the old motor mounts, move the brake line, bolt in the new v8 mounts. Put in the v8 motor and trans as one unit , wire it all in, wala your done. Its not hard at all. Change the front springs if you like.

Also whats you concern for the car? More power or daily driving?

You will never find the performance parts avalible for the 350 like you will for the v6. For example the guy i got my motor from dropped a 90 350 in a 78 camaro. Put some aluminum heads on it with a edelbrock rpm mani and went 12.40-12.60 STOCK bottom end,NO nitrous, untuned holley carb.I would love to see a v6 go 12's ,n/a with just a head swap. Also the v8s seem to last longer with less problems then the v6's and they are easier to work on. If you got the $ do it! You wont regret it!

what is this 1/4=1/2 that you speak of ????????????? and a well tuned v8 will get decent milage but you gotta keep up on it

oh and if you can get the motor for a freebie a decent rebuild should only cost you $1000-1500 at least thats what kind of price i got local to have a mild 383 put together

Well, on one hand that V-8 makes its peak torque at a relativley low RPM, meaning less effort required to move the vehicle along.

On the other hand, more cylinders, higher cylinder volume, tbi (ugh)

If you drive it like an old lady, you may see a couple more miles per tank than your six. MAYBE. But if I swapped in a V-8, I would NOT be driving like that.

Gas mileage between the v6 and v8 isnt that different. Hmm lets see a big engine with alot of tq to move a heavy car , or a small engine with a small hp AND tq rating to move the same car. The v6 works harder and in some cases, has larger gearing which keeps it right inline with the v8 gas mileage wise.

Besides if gas mileage is that much of a concern sell the 3r gen and buy a electric car.

Exactly , if you wanna drive slow keep the v6.

Seriously, my 2.8 got almost the same mpg as a friends car and he has a v8.

well as far as it goes i dont pay attention to milage not only that i dont know how accurate my odometer is due to a few different factors ive done 3 rear swaps to this car and it was different gearing 2 time first it was 3:42's then 2:73's now 3:73's but i only get gas once every 6 days and its only about $14-20 dollars even at todays prices

Likie dud said above, it take some strong will power to drive a 350 and be easy on it. Even harder is not to buy more go fast goodies [ first race you lose the MPG goes out the window]

Can he afford the gas? I dont know.

Id say it all comes down to that. anyone with a 350 is gonna be going faster more often then not and mileage will be blown out the window. even harder is not making it faster.

I had a V8 camaro once and it sucked. Gas wasn't that bad if you drive like grandma.

One of the reasons I love my 6. I have almost ran out of gas so many times as it last so dam long I forget to even check the gauge or look. never had that happen to me in a V8 car.

In my V8 wagon. It coughs as I pass each station. though it should get 18-20 if I drove nice.

Still haven't fixed the gas tank in it yet. I know I will blow a months worth of V6 gas in a week once it is.

Then the motor need a rebuild or a tune up or has some serious issues.
