Starter woes (not mine)

Last night, after getting gas, I spot a Camaro SC with its hood open and the dude has a pair of jumper cables in his hand. I stop and ask if he needed a jump (even though it was pretty obvious) and he says yes. I'm in my Firebird, as the GTA is being parked for now. I pop the hood, fetching my stick to hold it up. We hook up the cars and all his starter does is this 'ka-click' noise. Upon holding it the key to start, it goes 'ka-click-click-click' really fast. I've never heard a starter go bad before, is that what I was hearing? Oh, BTW, the guy in the car was so flaming ghey it wasn't funny. Skirt, stuffed shirt and everything. It was really scary for a straight guy like me, but I didn't say anything and helped out however I could. Car looked terrible, too, the hood mat was dangling from a corner in a big way.

Yup, thats how my starter sounded. I bolted the damn thing in, crawled out from under the car only to hear that crap! Then i smashed my left pinky finger(6 stitches) when the new starter fell from under the car and landed on my finger pinning it between the street and the starter (it was a heavy duty v8 starter, heavy as hell)

Ouch. Of course, scars always make good conversation starters... Was it the solenoid on yours or something else?
