I use an SPF-30 waterproof, and keep some aloe handy when I miss a spot and burn
Seriously, use 15w-40 year round. I'm old enough to remember dad having the 10wt in the winter and the 30wt in the summer.

ive always run what GM recommends for the engine, 5w30. i use valvoline durablend. i think anything more than 10w will be too thick, unless you have some serious clearances or oil consumption. but for a normal engine, i would go thicker than 10w30.

note: if you run synthetic oil- you have to run higher weight because it is thinner and flows easier, thus creating a slight loss in oil pressure. Hotter climates and hard driving call for a heavier weight oil.
I run 15w50 Mobil one full synthetic. I have an '89 chev truck (350) that has OVER 400,000 on the original bottom end bearings, etc... all from full synthetic oil.

I usually do 10-40w Mobil One for the summer and then 5-30w for the winter. Stupid New England, 100 degree summers and 5degree winters.
