spark timeing

so i've been doing a bit of fiddleing around with this new car now for a few weeks, finished the tune up and she seemed to be a bit happier, and just for kicks i checked the timeing again to make sure it hadnt jumped any (it hadnt) when i buttoned it back up and took off down the road she was tearin up the the pavement like never before, but the SES light was on.. i forgot to plug the spark timeing back in. i did so and she whent back to running like crap. i had only got through 2 gears when i noticed the light and pulled over, so i just thought it was all in my head......
no tonight i had some time on my hands and decided to test this theory of mine and low and behold she romped down the road like a scalded dog.. of course things arnt so great once you get up to about 5k rpms but i shift between 3 and 4 rpms any way...
my question is... will leaving the spark timeing unhooked hurt any thing or should i plug it back in. i konw if this was a perfect engin this would be a bad thing, but its far from perfect. just any ideas on why it would work better like this and if it'll hurt any thing would be appreciated....

I think the timing connector has to do with your timing advance.
What did you set your timing at 10degrees? If you want you can bump it up to 12 and see if that helps any.

Then retard it back to 10 and see how that goes.

ive tried it at 10* as well, when i bought the car it was set to 20*and next to haveing the spark timeing unhooked it seems to have run pretty good that way just a hellofalot of vibration at about 4k rpms, so i turned it down and in doing that shes lost some cohonas at the same time....
