Water Pump

Are the water pumps the same in a v6 as in a v8? There any pullys you can get for the water pump, smaller pully's?

i'm about 99% sure they are different. why do you want a smaller pully on the water pump? you wanting it to turn faster? anyways, i don't know of any different sized pulleis for the water pump.

V8 pumps are different; the V8 pump just has two small flange areas where it bolts to the block. The pump goes "around" the timing chain cover.

Our damned water pump is a full flange, and it goes "onto" the timing chain cover. Makes it pain in the butt to change; you've gotta scrape that whole area- and it's aluminum, so it gouges easily. A v8 pump is much easier to change- granted it might be harder to get to the pump on a v8, depending on the car, but once it's just you and the pump left, the V8 pump is cake.

Get an Airtex waterpump- Better than the stock GM waterpump and less expensive.

One thing I found to be a pain in the butt was the water pump bolts. Those things are like a torq head. If I ever have to take that pump off again I will see if I can get new bolts or even studs that would be nice. Does anyone know where you can get a replacement bolt set for the V6 pump?

Smaller pulley would be higher flow pump I assume just not higher pressure which would be bad.

It would be bad to make the pump turn faster making more flow?

Now I don't know how a smaller pulley would rob power. With the smaller pulley there is less contact surface for the belt. The concept with underdrive pulleys is that you put a smaller crank pulley and bigger pulleys on accessories such as power steering and or the alternator. If someone could explain how you might lose power from the smaller pulley I am all ears and by no means an expert. I'd say the hard part is finding this smaller pulley.

because a smaller pully on any accessory will make that accessory turn faster. water pumps take a pretty good amount of power to run anyways so if you try to turn it faster, it will put even more load on the engine, not to mention the fact that there is nothing to gain by turning the water pump faster. i, however, have thought about putting a big pulley on my water pump for the track. when i'll be turning high rpms, the pump will be turning fine although it will be a little slow idling...therefore, freeing up the load on the engine. if someone else has a better explanation, go ahead...

I just put an asp undercrank pully on my car, should I get bigger pully's for my alternator and power steering? I figured leaving the other pullys alone would make it better.

I know I put JET underdrive pulleys on my car and did not notice much of a difference. The only pulleys the kit came with were the alternator and crank. The problem is with the alternator it does not really spin as much as it should causing a lower charge. My solution to the power robbing accessories is something in the range of a 350 sbc

you can do the bigger pulley on the alt. i've never heard of one for the p/s pump for us guys but it'd be nice. although, p/s pump doesn't do much if you're drag racing where the wheels should be straight all the time. anyways, i've got the alt pulley on my car, well, alt and crank, and haven't had any problems with it. if you have a big stereo or something, the alt pulley probably isn't a good idea.

It's just the kind of thing with the voltage where if it's raining and I got the wipers on, the headlights, and a turn signal it gets mightly close to the red. I was thinking of getting a 140amp alternator instead of the 105 one I have now. The problem with that is more amps probably translates into robbing more power from the engine.
