91 rs vs rs...

i am finally getting my first car next weekend. Its a 1991 camaro rs hardtop with the 3.1 mpfi. My brother has a 1991 camaro rs convertable with the 5.0 tbi.

Even though the v8 has 250 ft-lbs and 170hp the 2.73 rear gears really mess it up. The v6 has 140hp and 180 ft-lbs but 3.23 rear gears. They both have the same a4 tranny with those messed up gear ratios so that doesnt change anything.

So for bragging rights which one would actually win in a 1/4 mile drag race... As far as i know the 5.0 gets 17 seconds, and i cant find a drag time for the 3.1.

Thanks for anything.

edit: just realized i put this in v6 forum but it kinda belongs here...

They'll *probably* both run about the same on the track.. though I have seen LO3 wednesday cars that pull mid 15s bone stock, but don't count on it. The V8 will definitely feel faster though, since the LO3 produces peak torque slightly off-idle.. fun to drive, even though they usually lack anything remotely resembling top-end performance. Honestly, I wouldn't call either motor better.. but I *would* definitely go for the vert.

I'd also keep the 2.73 rear until you've had your fun and done other mods... I get in excess of 20mpg city out of my LO3 thanks to that rear.. cruising ~40 mph @ ~1100 RPM is blissful at the pumps... same with 55 @ 1500 RPM, 75 @ 2250, etc...

Man I need to get some friggin 2.23 gears or something for my bird. I get maybe 200miles to the tank driving around down and the rpms stay pretty friggin low cruising to work at 40.

well i dont think he cares about gas milage too much, or maybe he will once he actuallyhas to pay for it. But he wants to get his car as fast as my parents 97 ws6 vert that already has flowmasters and ecu. So its gona be hard for the 305 to match that without alot of money. but back to the gears it already took so much work to convince him to actually want to put 3.73 gears in his car so i dont wanna undo that. But he mainly wants to be able to spin the tires at random.

well than ill just have to wait until i can finally get my 2nd gen 400cui Trans Am.

one more question, i havnt been able to do anything much in the car yet since its not mine yet and i dont have lisence yet until mid augest. but can the v6 stock spin tires on a launch or no?

Thanks for your replies

Edit: with gears that low wouldnt you risk stalling when the torque converter locks up? or excessive clutch wear on first gear?

I usually get mid 17s in the 1/4 mile, according to the G-tech. A big factor is also who is in better tune. A 3.1 in great tune will beat any 5.0 in sh-tty tune any day of the week.

him with nitrous is a very bad idea... when his car doesnt want to shift to second he just lets those rpms build up... a centrifigul(sp?) supercharger would be good though..

well it would be better if he got a new camaro with 5.7 instead, would be alot cheaper... and lately he never really drives his car much, it shifts like crap and burns lil oil on startup, horrible throttle response so its a good bit out of tune, but the 3.1 sounds and reacts kgood, i dont know about shifting tho.

not only that but i would bet that i could beat him on reaction time... and he cant launch at all.

just outa curiosity, can a stock 3.1 spin the tires off of a power braked launch?

last question, is the g-tech pro accurate at all?

Thanks for input!

i think you have a good chance ...or not....only becouse you say you havent drove yet, not to be an *** or anything but driving is half the battle and you dont have much experence. but both the cars are at the same slow level.. i hope you enjoy your first f body the first is always the best no matter how bad it looks..

ps..yea you can burn out all night long..i did it all the time but so can a honda so it dosnt say alot.

and the g-tech...mmm i woulnt bet on it bening perfect maby close..

well his car, the 5.0 can only spin tires after getting the k&n filter from power braking, and an ocasional normal launch, before k&n it wasnt happening...

and i have plenty experience in driving, maybe not drag racing but i know im better than him, he doesnt even care too much about the actuall racing, he's just talk...

A civic that spins tires is nothing special when they have 13 inch tires...

Thanks for everything!!!
