You can also download the Accel catalog from http://www.mrgasket.com , and then take that part number, put an "ACC-" in front of it, and search summitracing.com that way.

I think the confusion may be caused by this statement from http://thirdgenmods.firebirdv6.com/
Accel 8.8 mm - Here are some great wires which Accel claims to be among the most heat resistant wires made. Accel part number for the 1987-1992 F-Body kit is 8879. For a 1982-1984 F-Body, you will want part number 8862. You can pick them up at Summit Racing for about $45. For more information check out Accel's website.
It says nothing about 1985 or 1986. And no one wants to order an incorrect part.
I got 8 results from Accel's web site.
1. p/n 7033 8.8mm 300+ race wire uni fit
2. p/n 7040 8.8mm 300+ race wire uni fit
3. p/n 8026 8.8mm graphite universal fit
4. p/n 8878 8.8mm spiral custom fit (looking at p/n, this may be closest to the above described wires)
5. p/n 8036 8.8mm spiral universal fit
6. p/n 9000 8mm spiral extreme ht uni fit
7. p/n 4078 8mm super stock graphite cust
8. p/n 4021 8mm super stock graphite uni

graphite universal (8026) or spiral universal (8036)? Does it matter?
Gee, I wish I were actually far enough along on my car that I was asking these questions for myself.
Good news is I'm gonna get a 2002 Monte Carlo SS and park my firebird. I plan on totally redoing it (keeping the 2.8 V6).
Bad news is I'm in optometry school and I have no time!!!
Edit: I ended up getting a 2000 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP with low miles.

Graphite what? I'm not an Accel guy, so I don't know what that means. Don't they explain it all in their online catalog though?
Either way, If I Recall Correctly, the guys that started that website were mainly 4th gen (93-up) guys... so they wouldn't know that ACC-8879 also works for 85-86 cars without a problem. But go download that catalog for free anyway (to get a print version mailed, I think you have to send 'em $5, not worth it).
You could send the firebirdv6.com guys an email too and tell them to correct their website; tell 'em TomP says hi
I'm not sure what's different between 8878 and 8879. Nothing changed in the engine bay. It could be that 8879 has a right angled boot on the #1 cylinder? I know the 87-up guys have a hard time getting to the #1 cylinder. Either way, I'd probably go with what the catalog says.
Aaron, what store did you go to?? Never go there again!
Your parts stores sound like the parts stores around me... they can't read their books worth a damn. that's why I never buy any aftermarket part locally. I always go to Summit. The local speed shops are ridiculously overpriced, too.
Honestly tho, I prefer a universal set, where I cut the wires to the length that -I- want. That way there's no extra slop. I've also routed my wires over the tops of the valve covers, I don't route them in the factory positions. As long as you have an ohm-meter / multi-meter ($10 from radio shack), you can verify that you attached the ends correctly.

Tom, I went to an O'Reilly's, and the guys at my AutoZone are just as bad. They use computers here, but occasionally I get a guy that is willing to go through their books and actually find what I am looking for. Didn't matter too much this time, but I probably should have checked Summit.

I just bought a set of the Accel Spiral cores for a V8 in a universal set, you cut them to length, and they come with both streight or 90 degree boots on them., and a little tool to crimp the ends on.
I believe they were like $45 bucks or something.
You get a much nicer fit this way, and they are much more heat resistant than the cheapie "In-exact fits". I only got a year out of the cheap ones anyway, so they aren't much of a bargin.

Haha, yep, I hate stores like that. I've got a few that I go to who will use the greasy old books, and they never give me the wrong part. I even use websites like http://www.partsamerica.com and http://www.carparts.com and http://www.expressautoparts.com just to verify part numbers... that way, when I go to buy a rear wheel cylinder from a local store, I know that they're giving me the right part. (It's fantastic at Pep Boys to be able to walk up and ask for a part by it's number... such as "I need 6 spark plugs, (they start typing on the computer) AC part number R42TS (they stop typing, do a double take, then scurry off to get my plugs)."
Anyway, I'm an MSD guy... I run MSD 8.5mm "Super Conductor" wires, custom set, part # MSD-31199 . That's actually the V8 set. Turns out, it's $10 more for two long plug wires- which means that I either get two spares, or, after 3 sets, I wind up with a set of wires "free" (actually for just $30, $10/set times three.) The V6 set is just MSD-31179 ... oh these are Summit Racing part numbers (you can put 'em straight into their website); anywhere else, you'd ask for "31179 or 31199 made by MSD."

Accels plug wire boots are terrible. Its not the wire that fails on any sparkplug wire, its the boot. They crack from heat and arch.
I speak from experience. The wore insulation thickness helps lower resistence of spark travel from heat. CUt to fit wores kits are always best to use and it is always best to make them as short a path from the distributor to the spark plug as possible.
I run Taylors 10.4mm with firesleeves.
I'll do a search and see if I can find an old picture I posted with bad Accel boots.
Found it: https://www.thirdgen.org/techbb2/sho...ht=%2Aaccel%2A

Accel Part Number 8878 Custom Fit
This number from the FREE box of 8.8 plug wires sent to me by Accel!
WHY FREE?
Accel rewards ya with lifetime warranty on their plug wires.
Ya got a problem with their wires, return them to Accel & they reward ya with new plug wires.
I know.
Last set of Accel plug wires I bought was back in 1989! I've been returning the worn out plug wires after several years of street usage!
From my original Super Stock 8mm they upgraded me to 8.8!!! Again two free sets! (part number 8878 for us 6-ers)
I recently returned ONLY 3 worn out plug wires. I asked for three new plug wires. Yep, that's what I got back!
ACCEL MAKES THE BEST STUFF!
Been hooked on Accel stuff since 1983!
2 sets of 8.8s on the Blazer & the Firebird & a set of 300+ on my Corvette (a swap meet buy of $12. conversion kit to GM (from ford) usage was about $10. 300+ wires cost like $80!!). I use asbestos wrap from welding supply store to cure any boot burning problems (only on the Corvette with headers & since 1995, zero problems).
