hi guys iv got a 1992 3.1 V6 firebird, iv been looking at the board for a while and found it very helpfull so i thought id introduce my self, names nick i live in kent in the uk and have had a few american cars starting with a 78 caprice clasic V8 and a 72 elcamino custom( what a ride) and i just got back in to american cars. i use it daily hense why i got a V6 as the fuel costs loads over here. i have a few problems with the running of the car but i wont go in to that yet as i will be using the search button and going through all the sensors, if someone could give me a full list of sensors that the ecu (ecm) uses to keep the thing running true and fair i would appreciate it.
all the best and i hope to be speakijng with you soon.

Things needed in good shape not ecm noticed

Going into further detail about the sensors Dale posted, your car has:
MAP - Manifold Absolute Pressure (3.1s were the only V6s that got these)
EGR - yours is digital, I hear its an expensive replacement (if you do need one, I say hit the junkyards and get one off a FWD 60° V6)
VSS- Vehicle Speed sensor- your car has this, its in the tranny where a speedo cable normally goes.
I think everything else is right. Definitely do a TomP tuneup, I'm sure its on the sticky at the top of this board.
Good looking car, good luck and welcome to the boards!

Nice clean bird. I don't see many clean v6's esp. 91-92, since most are crapped out where I live.
I'd love to get one like yours as a daily driver.

And for that '92, there's also a knock sensor, correct?
Since we're listing everything for the motor (hey this should be a collaborative tech article!!)...
There's also the combination oil-pressure-sender/fuel-pump-switch. (It's the somewhat large "can" by the oil filter's mount.) The pressure sender is for the dash (for full gauges, it's a sender- for idiot light dashboards, it's a switch). The fuel pump switch will bypass the pump relay and send +12 volts to the fuel pump for as long as there's oil pressure. That's why sometimes, when you shut the car off, you may hear the fuel pump stay energized for a second or two- that's the oil pressure slowly bleeding off to zero. 85-86 (and maybe '87?) 2.8's received separate sensors instead of a single larger sensor.
Fan switch is located in the outermost corner of the Rear of the passenger side head (single green wire). This is what kicks the fan on at 230 degrees; the computer will also turn the fan on, but this is the fail-safe.
Dale, is "ECT" a new label? I haven't seen it yet. Rexer, you might also see the "ECT" labeled as "CTS" (Coolant Temp Sensor), and the "IAT" labeled as "MAT" (Manifold Air Temp).
Oh and welcome to the forums!

Good one tomp, forgot about the knock sensor.
On my charts, its called ECT, and IAT
Fan switch is for 2.8 only, us 3.1 guys it is controlled via ECM

Belts to used to still show its length, but their is a LARGE gap in whats avaliable here, thus why I have a custom alt bracket.

oil pressure fuel switch thing... i take it if you loose oil pressure for some reason this device will shut the fuel off and that will kill the engine. i like it. bet its a bugger if it goes wrong though. i can see me getting a non start and it will look like a fuel pump/electrical problem but its just a dodgy oil pressure sensor stopping the fuel pump from being switched on. definatly one to look out for on any non start problem.
