soot on new exhaust

i had a new single outlet muffler installed with 2 mandrel bent pipes, and i just started a long commute to my work after basically not using the car very much alll year.

noticed a soot all over the inside of the pipe and around the outside of the tip.

car runs fine except for a little hesitation and an intake back fire when cold that goes away quickly. it only does it the first time you rev the car or begin to move after starting the car. its not throwin any codes, but i do notice sometimes when im cruising, the OK light will come on -i have the digital dash and usually say if the door is open and you close it the car will say OK on the dash in green. so im thinknig maybe for a split second the SES light is about to come on but corrects itself?

also the OK is supposed to some on right after all th dash lights come on and then go out, but it doesnt now. also making me think that there were stored codes. but all i get is 12.

im going to keep driving the car until the SES light comes on.. it passed emmissions on june 11th, i had the oil changed, plugs, engine flushed, brakes, wheel bearings, rear diff fluid, TPS changed... only mods are open airbox with K&N, hypertech chip.

i have a spare mass air flow downstairs i can throw on if thats the prob.. i guess the only way to tell if its fixed is if i dont get the heistarion and after fire, o the ok coming on while cruising.

also where is my power steering flid resivoir??

if youre getting soot, it most likely means youre running rich. what did you have done after you went for the emissions test? the SES light wont come on if youre running rich, OBD I is too old to watch that kind of stuff closely. and as far as the OK light, i havent ever seen one.

If the soot gets this bad:

check your TPS, mine was WAY off after the 3.4 swap.

As far as the power steering fluid resovior,

THe big pulley looking at the pics right, your's is in the same place. Do what GreyFox said about checking/refilling fluid.

It's probably just normal carbon deposits; nothing to worry about. The carbon will actually help reduce the "hollow echo" of your new exhaust. Now if you were blowing black smoke or your card did what Projek's did, you'd need to check the car over.

If you keep some wax on that exhaust tip (even if it's bare steel), it'll be easy to clean the soot off.

was driving home from work today (i excersize my car pretty hard now that i drive beamers for a living) and my car slouched, like it either misfired or didnt get fuel. then it did it again. and again. so i get my mechanic on the phone and i tell him im either going to limp oer or get towed over. still no codes and the surging is keeping me below the speed limit.

by the time i get to the highway i cant keep it above 60 kilometers/h and have to pull over. i check the tps, (which because one bolt is sheared off it was a little crooked) nope still popping and stalling/surging then i unplug the maf. bingo!

so i drive home and throw on one of the ones i got from a junkyard for 10$
