Needs help with seals?

Now that my car is a daily driver i noticed I am leaking oil in a coupel of places, one is the tranny. I believe the name of the seal is (extension housing oil seal). Its leaking where the driveshaft goes into the rear of the tranny. The other leak is on the rear axal. It where the driveshaft again goes into the axal. Not sure of the name of the seal, are these hard to replace? Thanks guys

the seal on the trans isnt hard to change at all. take the driveshaft out, pull the old one out, clean up the surface real good, install new one with a big socket and a hammer. I havent had to replace any seals on the rear of my thirdgen 10 bolt yet.

trans output seal isnt hard, just pull the driveshaft and use a flat screwdriver and a hammer or a seal puller (preferred). the other one is the pinion seal. that is a PITA. do not try if you dont know rear end work.

Is it hard to yank the driveshaft off? If not I will do that one, once the drive shaft is out, its easy to get at the seal? The rear unfort in leaking, spraying stuff all over, Grrrrrrr. What need to be done for that? Thanks

Is it leaking from behind the gland nut from inside the center of the yoke on the rear, or is it coming from the pinion seal itself on the outer edge?

the driveshaft comes off w/ 4 bolts, some you have to get a prybar and pry out of the pinion, but its not bad, then it just slips out of the trans. dont be under it, you will get trans fluid on you. if you have a seal puller, the seal comes out in about 10 seconds. if not, it takes a bit longer.

Before you remove the strap bolts at the axle yoke, mark one side of the driveshaft's u-joint and the corresponding side of the axle yoke. That will keep any balancing that the factory did. Granted if you don't do that, it probably won't throw things far out of whack- if at all- but it's quick enough to do.

When you re-install the driveshaft into the trans, coat the outside of the trans-end yoke with some auto trans fluid. I use some ATF on a paper towel. Also, as you wipe that end with trans fluid, some dirt will come off; try to get it clean- you'll be pushing that yoke thru your new trans seal, you don't want any dirt sliding against your new seal.

(And if you weren't replacing that seal, but just remove the Dshaft for whatever reason, the same thing applies- wipe that outer area of the driveshaft's trans yoke with atf to keep any dirt from ruining an existing seal, since you need to push the d-shaft into the trans to remove it from the rear axle pinion shaft.)

Thanks guys. I pull the driveshaft down, then the driveshaft pulles out of the tranny, is that seal right there? Thanks so much.

As for the rear, Not sure to tell ya the truth. I know the motor better then trans and rear. I looked under there the other day and noticed it was all wet and drippy on the u joints, and when i drive, it leaks onto the floor boards of the car. Does that help at all? I can take another look if that will help. Thanks again

It can leak from two different places near the yoke, 1) from the seal intself, or 2) from the splines on the inside behind the nut.

You'll be able to tell with the driveshft on still also. If it is wet coming out under the nut just behind the driveshaft u-joint to the rearend then the splines are leaking. If it is dry inside the nut area, then its the outer seal. Pray its the splines leaking, thats an easy fix. If so, let me know and I'll go into detail.

I have the same problem with my rear it is leaking inside the pinion where the nut is. Can you give me some details on how to fix it. Thanks alot.
