Ok so i just started work PT @ night for some extra play money b/s i figured it's about time i got off my *** and started doing some of the stuff we've all talked about

anyway i was driving home yesterday and hit this really i'm talking black ZERO LIGHT area so i tried to tap on my high beams

all of a sudden all my lights went off and i was driving 75mps with no lights so

after several tries the low beams clicked back on when i finally got home i looked at all my lights and it truns out that somehow my pass side turn / fog signal light was / is cracked and shattered

I played with the high beams sitch again and the same thing happened three more times then on the 4th try they turned on but now will not turn off and my right hand blinker stay's on

so i'm figureing i got a hell of a short

ok i've been playing around with the SEARCH button all day and it kills me how much stuff pops up completly un related


so i figured i'd post and get some feed back from you guy's

i need the switch for the wipers/high/low beam and a new light fixture while i'm at it I might as well do a total relamping

so do you all have any parts numbers for me

i'm looking to get a set of the brightest lights all around
b/c i'm an old blind *** bat at night and can't see for sh*t

i know a a lot of you are running with silverstars and other have h4 set up's but what would be the pro's and con's of each and what do i need to know b/4 trying to install them if anythign

The switch in the colum on mine is fubar, and sometimes brights dont work, sometimes no lights work

X-womans car was a 1991 chevy also, had SAME EXACT PROBLEM!

I just have no experence on pulling colums apart, nor want to know how much that part is gonna cost I dont drive mine alot at night, so no major worry for me.

Do *not* waste money on silverstars. GE 4656HO were the best lights I ever ran... the silverstars are getting booted *AS SOON* as I can afford another pair. Silverstars burn at a nice color temperature.. as advertised. Pretty good representation of daylight... but the 4656 silverstars are dim as hell and the beam pattern quality assurance is heinously flawed.

I think the hi-beam switch being broken has something to do w/ airbag columns. I don't have an airbag, and my switch is perfectly fine, same with our 85 T/A, no problems. However, 90firebird has had problems w/ the switch, and the same goes for my ex's 92.
I do know that there is a tech article somewhere on the site talking about this problem, that the rods are loose or something. Check the main page.

I have the same problem with the highbeams that you have. I have gone to turn them opn and all my lights go out then my high beams will go on when i try it again. If it gets worse i might just put a highbeem switch in the floor.

I think you will probably find that your problem lies in the steering column. The lever that has the turn signals and brights probably has some bad wires, or is just broken.

I read a while ago i think it has to do with some metel lever thing in there slipping off.

What I have seen happen on a fairly regular basis is that lever that controls everything has a wiring harness running from it, that plugs into the column. More than once I have seen the wires get "pinched" and messed up. Usually that leaves it just plain not working, not intermittent. However, it could.

I got a 91 firebird and have never had a problem, kinda scary reading this cause who knows when mines gonna go....

i'm thinking it might be both the messed up light fixture and the control lever

it looks like rain now so it'll have to wait till tomorrow to play with it more

Don't feel alone, our '91 RS has the same problem- I forgot about it and hit the high beams one night in a VERY dark area (mountains) called "Sam's Gap" on highway 19/23 north of Ashville, NC and found myself in TOTAL BLACKNESS.....until my frantic clicking of the switch got the low beams back on!

I believe the high/low beam switch is bad or there are some pinched wires in the column. Now I just leave it on low beam, I'll fix it EVENTUALLY....

i know that i have to slam my door shut sometimes to get my lights to flip up, i'm just to lazy to take the switch apart

GE's suck! So do the Silverstars, for that matter...

Go to Autozone, get teh Cool Blue 4666 and 4656 (I believe those are the numbers)

Damn bright. Also realize that proper adjustment will go a LONG way!

I had this problem with my car. I was driving on the highway one night and when I tried to turn on the high beams all my lights shut off.

The problem is in the steering column. You have tilt don't you? You have to drop the column and loosen and then retighten some screws for a metal rod attached to the brights lever. Sorry I don't haave any pics, but once the column is down it's pretty obvious.

I dont think that is the problem here. this is an intermittent non function of the bright lights and turn signals. If it didnt click at all, and they didnt work, that would be different.

well i ended up working all weekend so i didn't have time to do anything as of yet but thanks again for the info and i'll keep you all posted

never happened to me and i hope it never will, but pull down the coloum. my buddy had it happen
