car running poorly need some advice
alright guys my car has a nice high idle on startup, and i'm wondering if its not actually a vacuum leak. could the tps going bad make my car run like ****? when i step on the gas sometimes it bogs down and then it revs really high(in neutral). also i have to pump the gas to get the car to start, i'm thinking a clogged fuel filter is the culprit. i did check the car for vacuum leaks but i couldn't find any. so i'm thinking i just need to replace some stuff to make it run better.
and will a tps outta a 350 work?
only reason i'm asking is because i'm not in a position to get my 3.4 in yet. so i want this car running better for a while before i bother taking it off the road to drop in the new engine

could it be that my egr valve is shot? i'm not getting a check engine light and haven't bothered checking for codes, cars just running badly

yeah, i'll start it up it'll surge up to about 2500 then down and idle between 1300 and 1800 hundred. or when i push the clutch in it will surge up to about 2500 again

i'm thinking its the tps, or a clogged fuel filter. otherwise why would it surge? i know one of you out there has the answer, actually whats the reading supposed to be on a tps? i think i'll go check it tommorow

A stuck EGR will cause it to lope or surge at idle. The computer is telling the TPS to overcompensate so the car doesn't stall. My experience from owning my car with a mechanical EGR (non-digital) is I have NEVER seen it throw a code for a faulty EGR in about 13 years- I have had at least 3 go bad in that time.
I also have a '89 chev truck with a TBI350 and that has never thrown an EGR code either- I have owned this since new and have replaced it also a few times

well i know forsure thats there a leak in the exaust manifolds for the egr. guess i'll just bite the bullet and replace the egr, only problem is i have to take off the plenum to get it out.

hmm since we are on the subject, my car is hard to start cold, has a high idle and has a nice unburnt gas smell on startup. these all egr related? i know my valve stem seals are on there way out, and my distributor o ring needs doing.

my car was doing that,
i had k&n air filters and it was the oil getting on the MAF so i blew it off with high power compressed air, i also had puked up some cap n rotor terminals. get a bosche cap and rotor they are 20$ canadian
i changed the plugs too. had 3 bad ones. never get niehoff premium wires. they suck.
also take off the IAC and clean and adjust the pintle.
then on the driver side of the throttle body there is a screw facing the front of the car from the windshied to mannually adjust the idle speed. do this with the iac unplugged.
then disconnect the batt and hook everthing back up. the drive the car for 5 mins to smooth idle
change plugs too while youre in there. its not hard and only 2$ a plug
my car had all the symptoms you are describing. and alot of soot on the exhaust.

vsixtoy- i had an EGR code from a plugged vacuum hose going to the EGR. i also had a code thrown from my EGR valve sticking shut..... on separate occasions. mine was a stock 2.8 at the time. what year is yours? maybe thats a difference, who knows.

Camaro is an '87, Truck is an '89.
My two newest (Most modern)vehicles I might add. I will never, if I can help it, ever buy a new vehicle ever again because of the performance limitations due to smog checks here in So. Cal

i'm having the same problem right now, only i i already just replaces my tps so i'll bet thats not it, i took the IAC apart and cleaned the crap out of it, i also i guess reseated the little arm inside, the first time i put it back in it was hard as crap to start and then it idled fine but after a restart it went back to idling at about 2500 now, i'm getting real impaitent, i thought about replaceing the IAC but no autoparts store around me for 20 miles has one
also i had the car running for a second while the hood was up and i opened the throttle and let it go and BOOM i saw smoke come out of the metal line that runs from the egr back to the manifold, think my egr is busted?

plugs are less then 6 months old, wires are fine and the cap and rotor i'm replacing with a new one. damn it i'm just going to grab the voltmeter and do everything
