i don't like this.....

i posted this on the tranny forum, didn't get any responses, perhaps someone here might be able to give me some info...

700r4, prolly like 2/3s throttle, 2nd gear studders and trys to shift untill i come off the gas, and then if im rolling at like 25mph, and i lay on her it does the same thing going into 4th, now if i just drive "normal" it don't do it. it shifts into p,r,d,n,ect. good, and i have a tranny flush and filterchange scheduled for next weekend, but, the fluid is not bad, and it is full, i have ajusted the TV cable, and i have to check the tps senser, i gotta do that yet.(still not sure what 3 prongs i have to test) but it just seems like somthing isnt right mechanicly(computer, somthing needs adjusted) rather than the tranny is wearing out, you know what i mean? ive driven on trannys that are going, and ive never had the gears act quite like this. just wondering what you guys think.

Sounds like either a misadjusted TV cable(they're a pain), worn clutches in the tranny, or maybe a gummed valve body. Good luck.

ehhh...a fluid flush would help if the valve body was gummed up, but could make things worse if the clutches are worn out (I'd flush it anyway, got nothing to lose by doing but a few bucks). As far as the TV cable goes, sometimes they have to be adjusted "by hand" when they get too old. I had an '83 Camaro with the TH200c that I had to manually adjust the cable on because the cable had actually stretched to the point where it could no longer be adjusted the way you're supposed to do it (I think that had something to do with my father dropping the transmission out of the car before disconnecting the cable from the carb), but I have seen other people have to do this also. Try readjusting the cable, and see what happens. Also do the flush. If neither work, I'd start pricing a rebuild or another transmission. Good luck, I hope it works out.

I don't think the TPS will affect the shifting on an '86 model...it could affect torque converter lockup, but I don't think shifting is affected.

CamaroManBlack's right. You might not want to get that fluid flush. It might cause you to buy a new (or rebuilt) trans!! Worn out trannies have a lot of clutch material floating around in the fluid, which helps them shift since they're worn out. A few guys on thirdgen.org have changed their fluid on dead trannies (myself included, for my first dead trans!) and the trans died super-quick after that.

Oh, damn. I just noticed your car is a 1984. The trannies in the '84 v6's, and the 85-86 v6's (mine included), weren't too good. GM did a lot of redesign of the 4-speed automatic (700R4) thru the years...

83-84: Initial run of the 700r4
85-86: Some design changes, most important= stronger input shaft
1987: BIG design changes! Regarded as the "earliest trans you should get". Auxiliary valve body, improved accumulator pistons, etc. Most important = redesigned fluid pump so the tranny wouldn't run dry of fluid and burn up.
88-up: Not sure what happened, but the newer the trans, the better GM made it

So start saving $$ for a trans... do some junkyard diving, and try to find a 4-speed auto [i]for a 2.8 or 3.1 v6 only[/b] in a 1987-up f-body. Like I said, the newer the f-body, the better the trans. If you could get a trans from a 1992 3.1 v6 camaro/firebird, you'll be golden! But don't look at V8 cars; their trans won't bolt up to our v6.

I've been there, done that, twice. First trans died because of GM's problem with the fluid pump (which was fixed in 1987). Second trans, which was a $1300 Lee Myles piece of garbage that only lasted a year and a half, died because the torque convertor hub cracked and blocked my fluid pump from the inside! Third trans has been on it's way out for years... one of these days (haha) I'll rebuild it myself, because I can't do much worse than I've gotten already.
