need help with stock v6 rear question
alright lookin at buyin my friends v6 rear from a 2.8 88 firebird. I looked up the tech article and saw that the only combo like that had to have a 3.42, I was just wondering did the v6 come stock with a posi? Im wanting to stick this on my 89

Because the 3.42 gears are desireable.. then get the $99 take off SLP zexel torson, and bolt you 3.42 gears to it - 3.42 posi
That's if SLP still has the take offs...

right now Im looking at just using the stock 3.42 v6 rear or one with 2.73 posi, which would be better? are the v6 limited slip? is there any way to make it a locking rear end? thanks

Axle/Gears: 3.73
does your car currently have the 7.5" 10 bolt rear end? if it does then, yes, you should be able to put the 3.42 gears on your posi. unless the 2.73s are a 2 series gear. i'm not sure on this. if that is the case then you will need a ring gear spacer to be able to put the 3.42s in. you will definately like the 3.42s better than the 2.73s!
i believe that SLP sold all of the take outs that they had.

2.73 is 2 series, 3.23 and up is 3 series. How much does your friend want for the rear end? You can score a 3.23 or 3.42 posi 4th gen rear with disc for about $200 and the swap is the same I'm pretty sure, only downside is your tires stick out a lil on each side.

If you go with a 2.73 it'll likely be a 2 series rear end and you won't be able to upgrade past a 3.23. The spacer allows you to install the lower ring count gears into a 3 series. The V6 rear ends have the better gear ratios and usually haven't been abused as much, but likely won't be posi. I'd keep looking for the ratio you want in a posi unit. They're out there, although it's easier to find a fourth gen unit.
HOW MUCH YA WANNA SPEND?
In your case not much.
Rear end work costs plenty.
Ya can get away cheap, but....
3:42 gears give ya more kick in seat of pants take offs.
2:73 allow ya to go faster in top end, with not too much kick in pants feeling off line.
IF ya got a V8 & step up to 3:42 gears, ya done good.
IF ya get a cheap complete rear axle not requiring lots of work & IT'S LOW MIlAGE UNIT, you also win.
Posi or locked rears ya spending more than ya want to.
As in up to $1,000 range for those things, installed.
ALSO certain V6 rears have different splined axles. Later ones have more splines (like from 26 to 30 splines per axle).
