1000 bucks for a 1987 firebird.....
ive got a 91 v6 firebird and my g\f loves it and she is getting a car soon. i was wondering what u guys thought of a 87 firebird i saw in the paper for 1000 bucks. has a rebuilt trans. i was wondering if maybe theres anything i should look out for when we go check it out...ive got a 3.1 and know this is a 2.8, i just dunno if maybe the 87s had some problems or recalls or anything...thanx

My 2.8 was pretty reliable but it was neglect when my cousin owned it (like not changing oil or routine maintance), it had about 170,000 miles when it died (only paid $400 for not bad for the money)but i heared of them lasting longer. Far as power not much 2.8 mpfi have like 135hp and 3.1 mpfi have 140 hp, but for $1000 bucks go for it

a little much maybe
Sounds a little high to me. I just bought a '90 RS for a $1,000 and its in pretty good shape,mechanicly. (under 100,000 miles)[edit] also a 3.1
[edit] Unless its in pretty good shape Id say talk him way down, say 7-8 hundred. There are ALOT of variables involved obviously. But I would have a hard time paying that much for an '87, but like I said, there are variables that could raise the value....or lower it.

2.8, 3.1 who cares if the car was taken care of it could be worth it. YEah i think talk him down is a givin, but 700 or 800 bucks is alot and if it has low miles like your "Awsome 3.1" it could be worth it. but i think it is probablly worth more than 200 or 300 bucks.

yeah...i know these engines are reliable. mine has 131k on it and its fine besides a dirty tapping lifter. no oil burn, clean plugs... and i was on car domain and i saw someone had a v6 firebird with 319k on it.
Paid $900 dollars for my 86 2.8 camaro.

It also depends on where you live as far as how reasonable a price is. Where I lived in Maine I couldn't sell my truck for $1000, but down here I had 3 different offers for $1500 if I could get it down here. I'd say that $1000 sounds reasonable if it's in good working order, but try to talk him down. Check the rocker panels for rust holes.
Incidentally, I never did sell the truck. I just recently traded it for a very nice completely original '71 Jag minus an engine. Time to put a chevy powerplant in that kitty.

Yeah there weren't any weird things to watch out for with '87 2.8's.
As for trans-related issues, pre-87 automatic trannies had longevity problems related to the tranny's fluid pump. Even if you babied the tranny and changed the fluid all the time, the trannies would still burn up. But in '87 all 700r4 automatics got an updated pump.
I think the only "question" would be how well the trans was rebuilt; see if they've got receipts or something, and maybe the rebuilder's warranty is still in effect.

i think its been sold..i havent gotten a reply and its not in the paper ne more...
if i do get through to the person selling it...what are some quality places that do good work on trans? my parents have had numerous cars that had to have trans missions replaced and the cars were never the same or lasted more than two years. some were even replaced with new ones that went the only things that had good rebuilt transmissions were my dads hot rods. and im guessing he did it himself. i was kinda young when he had em..
