VSS differences?

Hey guys, I found a 140 mph speedo in the junkyard, but the problem is, I wasn't able to get the VSS for the car (engine/tranny pulled).

When I look up the VSS for an 89 Formy, I get 3 different p/ns, what's the difference between the 3 VSS's?

This cluster is going into a car w/o an electronic speedo w/ 3.45 gears, so I need to get a VSS.

Can I go to the junkyard and take a VSS off a V6 car? (3.42~3.45) isn't it?

how hard is it to get an IROC cluster to work with my 2.8 that currently has dummy guages? In the rare case that I actually find a cluster

The stick and auto trans use different ones. Then depending upon the trans driven gear there are different ones for the auto. Need to match the one to the driven gear used. IIRC there is information molded into the front of the outside cover. Try a search over on the trans board for more info.

While there get a 4-out buffer box. That will be required to convert the VSS A/C signal to a digital signal. The outputs of the buffer box will go to the speedo, cruise control, and the ECM. TBI f-bodys and some of the 87-89 MAF f-body's have them. Also Caprice in the same year range. Has '4-OUT BUFFER' on a label right on the box.

Thanks RBob, now what I'm finding is the difference between the two 700r4 VSS's, one has a smaller shaft for <39 or a larger one for 40+.
I went over to www.700r4.com and checked the gears that I need for my application (15 drive, 40 driven).
Is it safe to assume that the 700r4s from a V6 2.8 w/ 3.42 gears would have the same gears I need (15 drive and 40 driven)

Not sure about the 2.8's. I know the 3.1's with an auto have 3.23 gears while the 5-speeds have the 3.42 gears.

Thanks

I have a 92 3.1L with a 5 speed that I bought about a month ago. I was wondering if I had 3.23's or 3.42's.
