paging KED85 for 2.8->3.4 swap question
For background, I just picked up a 1995 3.4 motor and trans to begin by swap.
I got the trans and motor separated tonight. The odd part is the the bolts holding the two together were 18mm not 15mm as I remember the old v6 bellhousing bolts. Also, there are 6 bolt holes that line up the tranny and motor. The 3.4 motor has sleeves on two of the bolts to line up the motor and trans properly. Since I do not have the 2.8 out and apart, is it the same way on that block?
If you are looking at the back of the motor, its the lower left hand bolt and the 2nd from the bottom on the right that have the sleeves.
Have you run into this or am I in for a fun swap from step one?

[bad KED voice] you're still good w/the swap. My 3.4 & 3800 tranny bolts are 18mm. [/bad KED voice]

2.8, 3.1 rwd & 3800 Series II all have the SAME tranny bellhousing bolt pattern.
Keep your tranny & sell the 95 4L60E.

I know the bolt patterns are the same but what about the aligment sleeves? Should I just do away with them? Also do I have to drill out the holes on the 85 trans to accept the bolts?

no drilling, no removal. I used the 2.8 bell housingbolts when I slapped the 3.4 in. I'm about 95% sure that the bigger head for the 3.4 bolts is just that, a bigger head.

It won't be a problem, use your original trans...and be prepared to replace it in a few months, since the 3.4 is much torquier and loves to eat stock trannies! Redraif had hers built by Neal Racing, and its holding up great. The 3.4 swap is well worth it, and not that hard to do...there are plenty of good threads on it, and lots of info from Ked, Dale, Project and others.

Thanks for the info! I have been keeping an open dialogue with KED85 for all my questions so far. I know there should be a lot of posts on it...however, when you search for "3.4" in the v6 forum, it comes up with no results found.
Hey
I missed this thread!
Been chatting with Fastbird
My only comments is that I never KNEW there may be a tranny issue to due I received my engines minus a tranny!
The 3.4 bolted right up to my earlier 700R4 NO PROBLEM
AND I used the earlier tranny bolts due to that's what I had & not knowing any differences may exist.
Yeah be very prepared for a tranny going south on ya due to the 3.4! I even had a tranny that had a very good rebuild (earlier tranny version), that went south after about 2 plus years of usage & servicing by the tranny installer shop.
I upgraded to a 1989 tranny/different rebuilder myself. Hope that stops any problem. Been thru two trannys already!
The 1989 Tranny I scored/had rebuilt is prior to computer assisted trannys (like one ya scored)
