High Rev an issue?

Alright folks, I am assuming my 3.1 RS was stock when I bought it used. But is the stock engine able to run up and passed 7k on the tach. The transmission shifts beautifully under normal acceleration and under WOT. So I don't assume it's hesitating to shift. So I decided to drop it into D1 and hammer it. The tach almost pinned itself before I got nervous and shifted into D2. I remember seeing somewhere on this forum that the block could handle up to 7k, but is able to handle more. I thought my tach might be misreading so I figured I'd ask you guys what mph you are at when your auto shifts under full throttle. Mine has been upshifting at almost 48 mph when the hammer is down. Thanks in advance guys. Appreciate the input.

the 2.8 and 3.1 motors can handle 7k but i wouldn't take it there too often, and never above

and even though the block might handle it there is a lot of stress going on with the rods, crank, and pins that would hold the pistons in place.
if your valve springs are weak they could start to float, if they are handling it fine now they might not be able to handle it for long though and I'm not sure but if these are interferance motors or not but this isn't the way I would like to find out.

plus with the stock parts I really doubt your making that much power up in that rpm range so what would hte point be?

Yeah, I figured that much about the power. I'm not gonna run her up that high, ever, if anything I was just worried that their might be something wrong that I was able TO go that high.

mines likes 7k! of course that's with a bigger cam, fresher bottom end and a nice new intake manifold.

After 4800RPM the stock engine is only pushing more air, not making more power. It's just limitations of the stock MPFI. Going for the extra RPMS gives ya better upshift.
I think your TACH NEEDLE BOUNCED to the 7,000 numerical area, not your engine RPMs.

Agg, Your tach is not accurate. There is no way you are pulling up to 7k on a stock motor. It will strain after 5k.That straining starts building at 4000 rpms and gets to struggling at 5k.

If you try and rev your car above 5k in 2nd (D2) or D you will see you are not gaining any benefit by taking it past 5k in D1.

Your stock tranny lag between shifts is probably also whats showing the tach needle bounce up to 7k before it engages into 2

With as built as my drivetrain and the motor goodies I have, I can turn power up past that but I still max out at 5800 and my tranny is as built as they get from ground up custom including a 9" v8 convertor custom made to fit. The stock y-pipe will not allow good flow above 4k.

Alan has headers on his N/A motor that helps his revs as well as motor work and a cam that make him power up top

7k stock? gah! Im paranoid to push mine to 5k. 7k = well beyond peak horsepower anyways.

thats weird mine pulls hard up till around 5000

after that it gets pretty winded and straines going up to 6
then it shifts its like 5k is the peak hp it seems at lest in my car

i had my tach tested and its almost dead on only verys by a 200
or so rpm near red line but this engine wont go above 6250
thats right where mine stops lol and when tested it was really at 6550 or something

so if your getting to 7k rpm then something is up as your pretty far in the red
