does anyone know for sure what chip the '87 2.8l ecm uses as the prom?

 

This will depend on whether the car has had the engine recall performed or not. The PROM can be one of about six calibrations, depending on both the recall (stall and hesitation at cold start, PROMs were recalibrated for richer idle mixture) and whether the car has California or Federal emissions systems installed.

Now, if you are referring to which IC it is, I dunno...

 

not which chip the factory installed, which one that it uses if i want to go out and buy some that are not programmed and program them myself meaning what size and spec the chip is if i were to buy it from say a electronics store(i know that they would not have them but it works for hypothetical reasons)

 

Yeah, I kind of figured that out last night. If I can find a way to get some of the plastic out from around the chip I might be able to expose some numbers for you...

Well I know worst case you can get some spares from the junk yards that can be flashed a few times. Thats what we did with mine. Quite a few computers in the 80s used the smae style/size chip! We ran thru the yards and pulled all the computers out of the cars and any computer that looked like mine we robbed the chip!

You may want to ask on the PROM board!
