What are those bumps for?

I took the intake off my 3.1L today. There are some huge bumps in the intake port. The only thing I can figure is that they are there to help direct and break up the fuel stream from the injectors. Is that their purpose or?

Since I plan to use a carburetor with this engine it seems like I could increase intake port flow significantly by removing these bumps. Can they be safely removed without damaging the heads? Does this sound like a good idea?

Those intake port "vanes" help the motor suck a higher velocity of fuel around that last sharp bend before entering the valves and combustion chamber. They actually give a 17% increase in flow (stats are from the GM power manual) by having them there rather than grinding them open.

Thanks RTFC. This is my first tear down of any V6 so those vanes are a new one on me. Previously I had looked at that squatty intake configuration with suspicion, there sure are a lot of tight bends and direction changes. Not as big a deal for FI but even dry air likes smooth flow transitions. It's always fun to learn something new!

Is the GM power manual something I can get my hands on?

It is in the "Read Me" sticky up top in this V6 forum. It is under performance.
Here's the link (go to chapter/page 3-16 for the vane info)

I belive you can save them to your pc, and use a graphics program to view them larger.

Not all v6's have them vanes. I think just the 6/60. I dont think the 3.8/4.3's have them

Dale,

I did save them to my PC, blew them up, pieced them together and generated a unified pdf file. If anyone is interested I could post a link to the pdf. The problem is that the initial resolution of the images is what it is and when blown up the readability does not improve much even though the print is bigger.
