sorry guys but you are wrong, i got the haynes manual open to page 0_25. it says this "Engine will start in gears other than park or neutral. chapter 7 deals with adjusting neutral start switch used with automatic transmissions.
that is word for word right out of the haynes manual.
chapter 7B says this on section 5
"1 remove the screws retaining the shift indicator plate to the console.
2 slide the plate up the shifter handle and secure it to the shifter knowb with a rubberband.
3 position the shifter assmbly in the neutral notch in the detent plate.
4. loosen but do not remove the screws retaining the switch assembly.
5.rotate the swithch assembly so that the service adjustment hole on the switch is alligned with the carrier tang hole.
6. insert a 3/32 inch drillbit as a guage pin through the service adjustment hole to a depth of 19/32 inch.
7. tighten the switch assembly retaining screws
8 remove the guage pin.
9. reinstall the shift indicator plate.
this is all word for word out of the haynes manual, so if there is any problem, contact them, not me.

(almost fell off the chair laughing)
isten i looked code 42 up in the manual, on the page i specified, that is what they gave me for the cause. then i went to chapter 7 (auto trannies)where the book tells you to go, and pages specified again, and typed exactly what the book said word for word.

CODE 42 EST (Electronic Spark Timing) The code is set when this circuit is grounded or open. A malfunctioning HEI module can cause this code.

87 the SES codes r in chapter 6(emission control). not the front of the book. thats the troubleshooting section for diagnosing based on a particular action. not an error code.

oops, your right, my fault. talk about brain fart.
i guess that i was looking for it off of memory, not taking the time to read where i was at. i just went to the front and saw troubleshooting!!!!

Engine: 3.1 in the begining and now a 5.7
Transmission: 700r4 w/ 2500 stall
Re: Code 42
Did this code also make your car run like it was during on five cylinders instead of six? I was driving down the road when mine went to crap and it too wanted to die when the brakes were applied.
