"Im leaking oil"

ok had the R/S up in the air and noticed some wetness on the trans pan.,., during closer inspection., from the passenger side and using a not so high floor jack .,., i could see that it is oil,.,. some of it is on the tip of the starter and appears to be on the bell housing,.., ok now what im hoping not to hear is that its a rear engine seal.,,.,. Please *** im hoping some one can tell me its a sending unit or sumthing,.., any way maby someone could tell me what they think,.with there knowledge of the 3.1
Do you think it is something besides the seal.,.,,. i mean unless the starter is kickin it up to the back of the trans housing.,., why would the housing be wet????

oh also one more thing my oil gauge also has been fluxuating during running at idel.......

It's probably the distributor o-ring seal. Over time, it hardens up and gets cracks in it (like any rubber seal or rubber hose does), and starts leaking thru the cracks.

It's a 1/8th inch thick, 1 inch inside diameter o-ring. Go right to a GM dealer for it because no other parts store ever knows about this part.

Right you are, Tom. "You want a distributor what? I can sell you a distributor.....a whole one!"

Dist. gasket always looks like rear main or oil pan or whatever else, it gets all over the place.

And your oil gauge fluctuation....did it do it before? GM gauges arent exactly top-shelf equipment and what youre describing sounds fairly normal to me, being that it's from an old factory gauge.

Hah! LOL There always seems to be someone that says "but I (insert absolutely opposite experience here)..." I get to be the one that got a o-ring at Autozone! I asked for it, they looked it up in computer and gave me one!

I also put a SBC distributor base gasket on mine.

It could also be the rear seal on the intake manifold. I had a bad leak, and I replaced the o-ring and it still leaked. Turns out I had a dryed out seal on the rear of the intake manifold. Just a thought.
