starter issue

Hey all...just want to confirm my thinking...my 92 RS 3.1 has been sitting the bulk of the summer. I started it up about a month ago after charging the battery...all was OK. Was running a bit rich, but that is to be expected.

Today I go out and of course, the battery is dead (failed to disconnect a month ago). I put the charger on it for a bit go to start and get a very rapid clicking from the starter. I turn the engine over by hand, no problem. Try it again, same clicking. Its not the click like what happens when there just isn't quite enough juice...you can tell something is trying to happen.

My thinking is that the bendix is not kicking out properly. You guys agree? Maybe a quick tap or two with the hammer??

Thanks- Matt

just dont let Advance Auto charge the battery cuz they dont do it right.the battery on my RS was bad & i took it to them to check out & they charged it,by the time i got it home,it was dead & i had to just end up getting another battery...shouldve just done that in the first place oh well lessons learned.

on my 87,it acts like its carberated when it gets soo cold out cuz i have a hard time keeping it started for the first few minutes.its always done that though.

How old is the battery?
How many times has it been dead?
Completely draining the charge is very hard on a battery.
If the battery has one or more bad cells, you won't be able to start the car even with the charger, not enough voltage 'cause of the bad cells.
The battery shouldn't be dead after sitting for a month.
I've got a car sitting in the backyard that hadn't been started for 4 months and it's battery wasn't dead when I went to start it last month.
