Have you checked your wires and connections? Could be dirty or just bad. Might be in the ignition switch in the column. Could be burning out. Mine always starts, but sometimes it gets hesitant, and I have to play with the key alittle bit so that bump on the key hits whatever it needs to inside. With the smoke out the carb it could a few things. Carbon build up, vavles not opening all the way for the exhaust, backfire in the carb. Might need a carb rebuild. None of it's too expenseive to do and most if it's easy, just time consuming. Does it smeel like it's flooding out when trying to start it? (heavy gas odor) Or is there no smell at all like no fuel is getting to it?

Have you checked ignition to double check for spark. I am not sure of the distributor setup on the carbs but on my 92 had similar problem. Would start and run fine, later wouldn't start. The ignition module in the distributor was only working intermitently. Might be worth a check.

My husbands Trans Am had this same problem. It would start up fine, run for awhile, but the minute you parked and turned it off it wouldn't start again.
The problem here.. The starter was getting too hot and locking up. We put a heat shield on it and it never had a problem after that.
Also check your fuel lines, if they are too close to the manifold you could be burning the gas before it even gets to the carb. We had this problem too.
One more solution.. Check your O2 sensor. My Firebird would crank and crank but wouldn't turn over either. We replaced that sensor and she started right up.

i checked the spark and fuel pressure and it seems to be fine.
what i did notice was before when the car was running, it took like 5-6 cranks before it actaully started, is that a symptom of a bad 02 sensor ??
what do bad 02 sensors cause ??

The O2 sensor has nothing to do with start up, actually, it needs to be brought up to temp for it to do anything. A bad o2 sensor will cause your car to run rich, get poor gas milage, and eventually kill your cat. converter

It would be a good idea to start a new thread, instead of bring up a long dead thread.
