How hard to replace thermostat on a 3.1?

Looks like it's a pain in the *** to get to without taking off a bunch of crap, or is that the only way to do it?

Its not hard at all. Just take of the top of the Plenum make sure you don't break or mix up the vacume lines. set it to the side. there are two bolts on the gooseneck. Just make sure you get the correct thermostat. One time they sold me the wrong one w/ the O-ring gasket and I cracked the gooseneck.

just make sure you don't get the t-stat thats for a 3.4. They gave me that one instead of the 2.8-3.1.. It was either because they knew I had a 3.4 instead of a 2.8 but didn't bother listening to me when I told them I had the 2.8 Intake manifold. Just take your t-stat out and if there is a recess or not. If there is you need the 0-ring gasket t-stat, other wise you just need a paper gasket.

i wouldnt even take the upper plenum off, just take the throttle body off and w/ the right tools, you can access it. thats the way ive done it on these engines. and id get a 180* t-stat, itll help keep everything a lil cooler.

WAIT.. Did you check the hole where the t-stat goes. Make sure witch one you need.. if you use to o-ring gasket when you need the paper gasket you will CRACK your goose neck.

I'll find out tomorrow when I take the old one off. I was already out today so I figured I'd stop by the parts store on the way home. But thanks for letting me know. I'd probably stick it on there anyway if you never said anything lol.

It's gonna be a paper gasket, at least that's what my 91 3.1l is. The guy at partsamerica might argue with you like the guy at the partsamerica near me, it should be a paper gasket though. I have to buy a intake rebuild gasket kit to get the gasket for the thermostat because they don't list the part number for the thermo gasket seperatly.

Use both gaskets... one paper that fits between the outlet and the manifold, and a rubber ring that slips over the tstat. My 3.1 had the AC tstat with the OEM rubber ring when I took it apart. I'm fairly certain it had a paper gasket also but I don't remember for certain. I know it has both now and it doesn't leak.
