First thing I would check is the condition of the ignition system... Make sure the plugs and wires are good, and the distributor and rotor are in good shape.

one of the guys at the junkyard hooked it up to his machine but said it wasn't showing any codes. Im thinking of just taking it out and putting in a LT1 or something like that, would that go well in my 86 berlinetta? I don't know too much about cars , but I've heard good things about the LT1, would this be a very hard swap? What kinda stuff would have to been changed?thanks for the replies guys.

It shouldn't be harder than any other v6 to v8 motor swap would be... change everything under the hood and it'll work.

with the berlinetta, you also have the added difficulty of getting the digital dash to work with the new engine.

I took it and put a mass air flow sensor on it and it starts first try now although the check engine lite still pops up. What do you think about a shift kit for the 7004r tranny? Also have any of you all put an ls1 or or lt1 in a car like mine? Don't know whether to go carb or fuel injected?!Any ideas would be great.

What's the code?

I don't think you'll find anyone on the V6 board that has an Lx Series engine...try the Engine Swap Forum, but everything under the hood will have to be changed to accomodate the new motor, even the transmission. To do it right, you're looking easily at $8000. And that's on the low end.
