Timing and EST

I was just about to advance my timing when I kept reading about the EST...? Does it need to be in?.....Out?....What? Thanks...

hook your EST wires (brown/black stripe) together after you time it as that is where it gets its signal from the ECU, 5 volts = full advance. 0 volts = no advance, it needs to be on

To check/set the timing the BYPASS connector needs to be open, or disconnected. Once the timing has been checked/set the engine needs to be turned off and this connector re-connected. The engine may then be re-started.

With the BYPASS (commonly called the EST connector) is open the distributor runs the timing at the base setting. When rev-ed up there will be some advance. With the BYPASS connector connected the ECM controls the timing.

On your '92 the connector is under the hood, passenger side, behind the stut tower. There is a single wire, tan with black stripe, with an inline connector. It comes out of the harness to expose the connector then goes back into the harness.

Set the timing on a warm engine. It will almost stall when the connector is first disconnected. Number 1 plug is passenger side front. It is easier to use # 4, center plug on driver side. Will time the same as using # 1.

If you have an auto trans, do not disconnect the battery to clear the code. Let it clear itself.

RBob.

RBob, why's that? Or is that just to prevent the long "re-learning" scenario?

most bins i looked at clear the codes them selves after 50 key turns. just simpler to disconnect the batt. as for manual or automatic, does not matter.

Yes, to prevent the required idle learn.
