v6 Woes

I have a 1986 2.8l v6 Camaro, the check engine light kept coming on, so I pulled out the codes and got a 33 and a 34, MAF sensor voltage. I replaced the MAF reset the computer, the check engine light came back on, this time it was just 34. I have a feeling it might be the computer, but I'm not sure.

The symptoms i'm having right now are as follows :

Loss of power in all gears

Constant sputtering/backfiring while accelerating

When at idle, it'll run smooth for a few seconds and then get really rough, it sounds like its gunna get close to stalling, and then goes back up to normal idle speed.

I've replaced the distributor cap, cleaned off corrosion the distributor, checked the EGR valve, replaced the spark plugs, catalytic converter was just replaced. Rotor and distributor are fairly new, as are the spark plug wires. Timing was also recently replaced.

Im really at a loss at what's causing all of this, I've taken it to 3 different garages and they are as lost as I am.

Hopefully someone has some suggestions for me.

I'd love to replace this with a 350, but I don't have the time to do it myself, and I can't find anyone willing to do it, so for right now, thats out of the questions.

Thanks Guys

Have you tried replacing either the MAF relay or fuse? The MAF relay is probably next to your battery, since you have a Camaro, and it is tucked neatly in the corner of the upper radiator support where it meets your headlamp supports. The fuse is one of two mounted on the frame rail and has RED and BLACK wires running off of it, not the ORANGE and RED one, which is for the fuel pump relay and ECM constant power circuit. If you cannot find your relay, trace the wiring back from the MAF, and you will run right into it. Looking for the fuse, all you have to do is trace the relay.

BTW, if you bought a used or rebuilt MAF, take it back (if you can) and buy a NEW one. Advance Auto sells a NEW MAF for $85. Why waste the money for more headache with a POS rebuilt unit when you can get a NEW one that will last a long time if you put it in right?

Re: v6 Woes

helo MaverickH1L. i am ukrupp and new to this board. I would like your input on my situation.

I recently purchased a new MAF and it is not like my OE in that one side has a curve piece attached by glue and this piece matches nothing. I now have looked everywhere for OE but no luck (all the same). I thought of cutting the thing off but scared to (warranty and debry).

I guess i could simply look for something at the auto place that will attach it to my filter apparatus securily. it's just frustrating on how they change things from OE that presents more issues.

and the air hoses are in great shape and would hate to lose one of them, thus having different hoses,etc,....

thanks

Re: v6 Woes

That MAF you have IS OEM, for the Firebird. You probably have a Camaro, which does NOT have the curved piece attached due to the direct connection to the air box that runs over the top of the rad support, whereas the one for the Bird has to curve into the side of the factory air cleaner housing. You MAY be able to get away with hacking off the elbow, but doing this is a real pain in the rear. First thing I would do is to make sure that the guys in the store you bought the MAF from KNOW you have a Camaro and NOT a Firebird, and see if they can't get you the right part. Most stores outside of some NAPA stores I have been in have a computer. The guy SHOULD show you an image of the part on the computer screen to make sure he orders you the right part BEFORE you pay for it and open the box. If I can find you the right part number, I'll post it up, but I am not promising anything...

:edit: Try cross-referencing Cardone part number 747557 at your auto parts store. That picture shows exactly what you need. The lifetime NEW unit doesn't have an image on the website, which is why I gave the Cardone number so maybe the idiots at the parts store can cross-reference it... BTW, part number is from partsamerica.com, and you can get the sensor shipped to your home (provided you live in the States).
