Pls help the Firebird in Taiwan

Pls help the Firebird in Taiwan

Hi, I will really need your help.

1. Bad smell from the exhaust, I can smell the gas sometime and very stink smoke when driving especially traffic jam, if I keep pump the gas when car is not moving, the exhaust header will comes red very fast, people said the gas is not burned completely, where should I check ?

2. The gas pump senser/connecter/wires are broken, I can't find a right one in Taiwan, my friend added a switch to make the gas pump keep send the gas so I can start the car well and the "engine check" light will not show, the problem is : the car still die sometime when I stop, what should I check ?

3. Computer : the people in garage connect the check computer to my car but sometime they lost the signal, they siad my car computer may broken, so sometime the car is hard to drive, pump the gas but the car doesn't run immediately, is that true?

Thanks for you help, no many people know about the car in Taiwan, sometime they just don't feel like to spend times on it.....

1. I would check the cat-convertor, and basic tune up.

2. I dont understand whats broken. If the part is resonable price, I can pick it up for you and mail it. Ive done this for another member on the board.. twice I think.

3. If the ecm is bad, it may do a varity of things. Over there, these are everywhere. So see #2 again.

1. What you mean basic tune up? Which part was included in "basic tune up"?

2. The sensor is control the gas pump, right next the oil pressure sensor and oil filter.

3. Is ecm the car computer or it just part of car computer ?

The ECM is the car computer. If they are losing connection, it may not be the car, it may be the scanner (more likely then the ECM being bad)

It sounds like you are talking about the fuel pump relay, which is on the firewall. Tha would keep the Fuel pump from prinming when you turn the key to "on"


For a basic tune up, replace the cap, rotor, spark plugs, spark plug wires, pcv valve, and probably the air filters. That should help get your car running better The Cat sounds like it is clogged for sure. I'm not sure about what you have for emissions laws in taiwan.. But another option to importing a convertor is to take it off and weld a pipe in its place.

Thank you Toehead:

1. Is the scanner means that thing they use to check the ECM ? I have a different years firebird, can I replace it if the problem is ECM? or I should buy one from Hawks-Thirdgen, it shows US50 for one.

2. Thats what I talking about...fuel pump relay, thank you man! not only the relay was broken, but the connceter and the wire....the cat is too hot.

3. basic tune up: once again, my poor English and poor cars knowledge, I am nout sure what is cap, rotor, pcv valve, what can I get the picture? from hawkthirdgen? There is no converter on my car....the middle / end of exhaust have been changed last week but I still smell the gas, people told me if there is no convertor in my car the air may become stinky, but smelling gas is not right!

To see if the ECM is at least responding, try to pull the error codes. You can read the codes yourself with a paperclip.
Q: How can I display the error codes from a Service Engine Light?
A: If your car does not have the 12 pin DLC connector, you may not be able to manually "flash" your trouble codes. The language "may be possible" appears to suggest that this method should work with most, if not all, 12 pin DLC equipped cars.

DISPLAYING THE TROUBLE CODES
Run a wire/hairpin from Pin 6 to Pin 12 with the ignition off (although on later cars it should be from Pin 5 to Pin 6), then turning the ignition to the on position without starting the engine will flash the "Service Engine Soon" light in the following sequence: flash, pause, flash-flash, long pause flash, pause, flash-flash, long pause flash, pause, flash-flash, long pause Following this "12" code repeating three times will come any trouble codes stored, flashing each of them three times. If you do not see the "12" flash three times, your diagnostic circuit is defective. Some vehicles will display stored trouble codes, then "12" again, followed by energizing "most system controlled relays." The fuel pump relay will not energize. The idle air control valve will fully extend to enable checking minimum idle speed.
CLEARING THE TROUBLE CODES
Turn the keyswitch to the off position. To clear any trouble codes, disconnect the power feed for 30 seconds. If this is done at the battery, and your car stereo is equipped and programmed with a four digit pin code, you may have to re-enter that as well to use your stereo again. A better place to remove power is at the fuse.

Scanner/ECM. Depending on the year/engine and some other info, the ecm in your other car may be the same, it may be different. It will have an 8 digit part number on it. Thats the first step, then pull the cover off it, and you will have whats called a promchip inside. It will have a 4 digit code on it like "AUJR" or something, you will have to make that match also.

Fuel pump relay. If thats bad, that is a problem. If you need a new one, and part of a harness, let me know. I'll go cut one off a jy car, or go and/or go get a new relay from a parts store and ship it over.

Tuneup, if you dont know what them parts are, you may want to take it somewhere and have them do it. But all of it is fairly simple and just takes a few tools.

Cat-converter. If its been removed, you will have a burnt gas smell, not a raw gas smell. If any part is glowing red, that means its getting WAY to hot from..
1.backed-up exhaust pressure
2.running rich IE putting in WAY to much gas and its burning in places it shouldnt
3.its running way to lean IE not enough gas

Your saying you smell raw gas makes me belive its running rich, or backed up exhaust. You can see if you have a cat-convertor yourself, it would look kinda like a muffler, but its placed under the passanger floorboard/seat.
