Disconnecting EST on '83

I need adjust the timing on my '83 and I can't find the tan w/ black stripe wire anywhere. I'm fairly certain it doesn't exist on my car.

So, to everyone who has an 83 or 82 year car and who have found the EST disconnect wire, where is it? The same place as all the other models or what?

Your 83 won't have that wire, since it will be carbed, and not even a feed bag carb (E2SE).

Unplug the vacuum advance from the dizzy, plug that hose and adjust from there.

My car has the E2SE electronic carb and I'm fairly certain it has EST. All the wiring diagrams show the EST being there. The fact that the dizzy doesn't have a vacuum advance is the last indicator that the car definetly has EST.

The last time I adjusted timing I unplugged the whole 4-cavity conector at the base of the dizzy. It seemed to work, but somewhere in the Haynes or factory manual it says not to disconnect this specific connector.

The Haynes piece of #!"# doesn't even mention disconnecting EST in the manual except for the Crossfire versions. Damn, how old is my manual?

There has to be people out there with 83' or '82 models, and somebody must have adjusted their timing before.

So what the hell then? Somebody must know "for sure" what is the correct wire/connector to disconnect.

on my chiltons it mentions that on carbed cars your supposed to disconnect that whole connector. i bet that GM added the EST disconnect cause they had people compaining about having to disconnect that 4 wire one or something.

Yeah, that sounds correct. I've disconnected that connector before and it seriously is a pain in the ***. Maybe if I take the tan wire off the connector, connect it back through a switch and then the next time I have to adjust timing I just have to flip a switch. Hmmm...

Thanks xplane!
