Idle rough, Shuts off at lights, No power whats the problem

I am having problems to no end
v6 2.8 87 Firebird.
It gets really hot about 220 - 240 on a decent day. It then starts idleing real rough and shuts off. It will fire back up though. Then about 20 minutes later the car will have no power. I will be driving and i will put my foot down it chokes and splutters and wont accelereate at all check engine light comes on too. Real slow on RPMs
some days its fine though what could be the problem. Im thinking its the fans on the cooling part and the fuel injectors on the shutting off part
What do u guys think
What can I try now
Thanks
Kelham

"WELL IN MY OPINION" i think you should do a code reading as to why you ses light came on that should determin at least one of your problems. then you can further trouble shoot from there .,.,also dont for get you can use the site's sea:doh feature

In my opinion, you need to figure out why your car is running that hot first. idling you really shouldn't get much above 220 before the fan kicks on. Driving, you should definitly be right around 200.

There are a lot of electronics under you hood...all of them HATE heat. figure out the cooling problem, then start looking at codes.
