coil test verification

went to leave work at lunch and all it did was crank. so i pulled out the trusty haynes manual and tested the coil after a few other things. according to the pic in the book (which sucks) i have to test the primaries by probing the two pins furthest away from the coil wire, then test the one closest and to the right and the coil wire plug for the secondaries, and the closest on the left and the metal case to check for short to ground or open in the windings correct? the last one is the one i wasnt sure on due to the pic and it doesnt tell where to test it. if so, i need a coil.

to bring this thread back to life for the same reason..... i got the coil that i pulled out of the car a couple years back from my tool box, put it in, and drove the car home. it started up just fine. i went to it the next day and i had the same problem, crank no spark ( i checked it w/ a spark tester). i tested both coils tonight and got the same readings off both of them, according to the haynes manual theyre both good.

how could it be that i put a different coil in and it ran fine till i got it home and now neither will work for me? has ANYONE tested one of these POS's before? i dont really have the money to drop on another coil on a hunch right now.

could have a crack in the wire from the dizzy to the coil or in the power leads to the coil.while the car is running wiggle both sets of wires aro9und and see if u can get the car to die.

i recently had a intermitant no spark issue, and thats what was wrong, the wire had broken inside the insulation on the wires from the dizzy to the coil, replaced that wire and havent ahad a problem since

Because just because they ohm out within the haynes manual specs doesn't mean it's good. sure fire way to see if it's a bad coil or not is to install it in the car and backprobe the negative side of the coil with a test light when you have the no-spark condition. If the light blink, then the module is good and the coil is the culprit, if it doesn't blink, then the module is crap.

Make sure you have spark exiting the coil wire though if the light blinks.
