v6 build

I am planning on pulling my 2.8 v6 out of my car and rebuilding it...anything i should do while im rebuilding it to get some good power? I remember seeing a new camshaft on summit racing and i know that i can do pace setter headers and then dynomax exhaust, but anything else while the motor is out that isnt too expensive?

Thanks,
Nick

best way to make power on the 2.8-3.4 is with a turbo. they had forged rods and crank from the factory good to 7200RPM IIRC. I would upgrade to a 3.1 or 3.4 if i was you. (I am in the process of swaping my 2.8 for a turbo 3.1 currently) I'm going to use the Melling MTC-5 cam, pace setter headers, and slightly home ported heads. havent decided on what turbo yet, but I'm planning to do it remote mount.

I rebuilt my 2.8 also and didn't listen to the guys here that suggested a 3.4 swap. Well I pulled the 2.8 and dropped in a 3.4 anyway. So I guess you can make your judgement off of that. Best bet is get a 3.4 and rebuild that. You'll come out better in the long run trust me on that. I love the power difference and it runs alot smoother than the 2.8 ever did. I mean you won't be nascar ready but your well on your way.LoL

deff dont waste the time with the 2.8,unless u are gonan do a turbo, even then ur beter off getign a 3.1 or 3.4.
3.4/ported heads/compcams 260h cam/1.6 ratio rockers/ported intake/and headers will do wonders.
btw u can get 1.6 factory rockers off later model 3.1 engines, instead of paying over 200$'s for a roller tip set from summit

junkyard/ebay http://60degreev6.com and 69charger383 has a stroker kit for sale here 2.8 to 3.1/3.4 cheap
https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/v6/3...3-1-parts.html
btw everything is the same. a 2.8/3.1/3.4 all use the same block
a 3.1 is a 2.8 with a longer stroke crankshaft
a 3.4 is a 3.1 with a larger bore

Tha 3.1 can't be modified to a 3.4 though, correct?
I read somewhere that the cyl walls are too thin for much more than .30 over.
I vote if your engine is gone - get a running 3.4 short block, it will bolt right in and you can use your same intake, exhaust, ecm, etc, etc...
Do some searching and you'll see that a lot of guys have done it without much trouble.

I got my 3.1 from hawksthirdgenparts.com 350 for the engine, 230shipping from SC to the middle of MO. so 580 total for a complete engine and wiring intackt. only thing I'm chaing is the throttle body, so I dont have cut and splice the IAT and TPS sensors. oh and dave, what year/setup did the 3.1 come factory with 1.6 rockers?

the 3.4 block has a lil bit thicker block than the 2.8/3.1. the 3.1 cant be bored out to a 3.4. i think the closest you can get is 3.3XX or something. youre better off just swapping up to the 3.4 if youre going to swap engines. more power, and its the same amount of work as swapping the 3.1.

ari has been boring some 3.1's to .120 over which is 3.4L,it is possible but man those walls are getting kinda thin,im sure it works for a stock build but id be weary for any kind of performance use specially with any power adder.
my block is getting bored to 3.3L which is pretty much the limit for any kind of hard use,and even at that im still pushing it.when i send the block out to be bored im gonna have them sonic test it just to be sure, and ill post up cyl wall thickness numbers

If you read up on my engine build you might get a head start.

http://www.cardomain.com/ride/2405754

I bored mine out .060 which is a bit much but totally doable (3.245L so you're correct drdave88). I've been running 2 years like that, all NA. I also used the stock 89 2.8 block and put a 3.1 crank in it. Its a pretty fast car, I can't complain other than the fact that you can't rev it up with the stock MPFI intake setup.

I'm considering doing the 4.3L TBI intake system to ditch the MPFI intake crap.
