junk yard trip this weekend

Plan on going to the junkyard this weekend. A board member asked me to find some parts, so I got thinking, lets see if anyone else needs something.

I was there last weekend, they had about 5 camaros, 6'ish birds. If you need something that is shippable(no glass or body panels) let me know, take a picture of your item n post it, etc. I'll look for it.

I must have the one your missing, or maybe you have the one I'm missing I need one of those also.
Need a center console and cover (grey/black).
Steering wheel, preferably pre-1989 w/o stereo controls and w/o airbags.
These items are in OK shape on my car now, so unless the are excellent don't bother to take them .
.
Thanx for asking, pics of my car if you click on my vbGarage...

first bird, what # digit is the year in on the vin, and what # is yours so I can try to get date correct parts. Also, do you have power windows(is that in the center consel on birds?).

Yes I have power windows, and the console needs to be out of 1990 to 1992 as the interior didn't change between these years.
The steering wheel doesn't have to be year specific. I would prefer an earlier year, as I am trying to get rid of the bulging airbag steering wheel .
I believe there was only two greys offered in the birds, both have the same color console/wheel (could be wrong) but black goes with anything.

As with ALL American cars made since 1980, the VIN numbers became standardized (actually world wide). The 10th character should be a letter, I'm looking for the console from L,M, or N.
Here is a good place to start when needing VIN info....

I knew the vins were standardized. I only remembered:
1st is where it was mfg
8th is the engine
the last 6 are the production number

and somewhere in there is a vin check number.

Yes, the 9th.
Here's what that number means:

Travis, no caps

Bird, all consoles were trashed, only one wheel, it was gray and rubbed thru. missing the center cover.

joekickass, I have a 1227302/HNR ECM, and your wire section.

I found a aluminum bird front bumper, my fwd roller rocker locks. It was raining so no swaybars and no excessive roaming to find "useless" stuff. I did find a good drivers fender, but I want a whole new car so I left it.

If you're using iron heads, I came up with a way to use SBC roller rockers. They're much cheaper than the 60* ones.

Get a set of aluminum or stainless rockers (not the punched steel style) to fit 3/8 studs. Then there is two ways to modify them.
1. Put a 3/8 drill bit in your drill press, then slide the fulcrum over the drill bit. Next pull the press down to the table and clamp your rocker TIGHT. Let the press back up, change to a 10mm bit, drill. You will have to have a sacrificial piece under the fulcrum so the bit will extend completely through to avoid making the hole egg shaped
.
2. If you have anybody you know in a machine shop, get a 10mm (has to be self centering)reamer and do the same thing except you can just clamp loosly and drill.
.
The nice thing is you'll have 4 extras in case you screw up since the V8 sets come with 16
.
You'll have to make some custom pushrods, but it's worth it seeing the rollers for our 60* are $160 or more. Right now e-bay has some SS 1.6 for $128
.
I just happen to get a good deal on some 1.6 from Summit second hand (still in package). When they get here, I'm going to grab a set of the Ford SB 1.7 and see if I can mod those to fit (seen the stamped steel ones for as low as $59).
.
Oh yeah, you can take another route and just use 3/8 studs and turn them down on a lathe and re-thread them (a little tougher for the avg. guy to do unless you have a lathe handy).
.
If I can get the 1.7's to work, I'll make up a couple of sets and offer them here on TGO.
.
BTW thanx for checking out the jy for me, as I was telling dave with 4 kids and my own compay, I'm lucky to have time to fart - never mind go to the jy during busines hours!
.
EDIT: Forgot to mention if your using aluminum heads (w/8mm studs) Dave has just confirmed the 10mm studs will bolt right into place of the 8's.

I'm not talking roller rockers, I'm talking roller cam and lifters.

As for rockers, they make studs that convert from 10-1.50 threads, to 3/8 studs so you can put v8, narrow body, non-self aligning rockers on it.

Who is they?
.
Also, I picked up a set of 1.6 rollers for the 60* and ordered a set of SB Ford 1.7 rollers. My plan is to mod the Ford rockers (to get the 1.7) and sell the 1.6's, got them in case I can't make the Ford set work. The SBF rockers are $73 delivered to my door, and the second hand set of 60* 1.6 RR I got were $90 delivered ($150-200+shipping new)
.
I saw one of your other posts on this AFTER I posted about the rockers.
Did the locks work that you found this weekend?
.
EDIT : The SBC 1.8 RR's are $500, I'm trying to keep my project low budget. Why not end up with the same product for less money? Got the cash to do a used V8 swap, but I want to see what I can get out of my 6er. Not to mention, I've never done a turbo project before and want to learn something new. Just spotted a '90 Formula here in Florida and am considering buying it---for my wife

I couldnt remember who made the studs, thats why I put they. Thanks project.

I have the locks, but I was working on other projects this weekend. It will be several weekends down the road before I take the engine apart to play.
