SEARCH all of your questions. im amazed how everyone ask's the same questions. the chevy 2.8,3.1,3.4 are all the same. get rid of the 2.8, get a 3.1, add a i/h/e and then start searching all of your questions. almost everything has been talked about.

Hate to say this Noah, but that ain't cold air. The concept is great, but unless your air comes from in front of the radiator, your still at "warm/kinda cold" air.

Nothing wrong with that and it works great, but unfortunately it still isn't "honest-to-god", "According to Hoyle", Cold-Air-Induction. One of these days when my 89 isn't my daily driver I have plans to get the dremel out and get my cone to stick into the area under the pop-up headlights. Mine are permanently up and they are going to stay that way so I have a nice little cavity where the K&N could live just fine.

Mine is built about the same except I have a MAF car so right about where yours says Firebird Nation, I have the MAF with some rubber piping on either side, joined up to a 3" 90 degree PVC bend on the intake side, up to the rubber accordion deal. The other side of the MAF leads to some more plumbing and eventually into a K&N.

89_Kitt, most of us build them ourselves. PVC/Giant exhaust pipes/K&N Cone type filter, etc. Its a lot cheaper than paying way too much for something.

Its your car, you can do what you want to it. Click the sponsors on the main page of this site, specifically "Hawks" if you want to go with the "storebought" solution. Otherwise head to the hardware store and build one yourself for 1/4 the price. Theres nothing magic about it, you just want to get air from OUTSIDE the engine compartment, into your K&N Air filter, then into your intake, all the while maintaining as large a diameter pipe with as few turns as possible. PVC, rubber plumbing, brackets, big pipes, etc are your friends.

For your question #2 Kitt - have a look yourself and figure out if it'll work for you. Nobody here is going to do the work for you unless someone has done it themselves and they are feeling helpful. Its much faster to just look and see and try to see if it will work yourself, rather than be lazy about it.

And #3 - Look at the FAQ's and Tech articles, etc on the front page of this site. Quite a bit of info there. When I first build my "****-warm air intake" the first thing I did was delete the airbox and stick a generic (non-K&N cone type" filter on the end, just to see if it worked. It did and that gave me the inspiration to build one properly.

Yes, but my only issue when building the intake was the smog canister being in the way. It's not an honest to goodness cold air intake, but it breaths about 90% better than the stock air cleaner hole that was the size of a quarter. Later down the line, if I manage to re-do it properly, I'll relocate the smog canister and have a K&N inside the actual fender, but I can't imagine much of a difference if at all from what I have now and that.

Heh, we're in the same boat. I can't see how doing ALL that work would benefit the car in the end. It would just give me some satisfaction is all.

2. i saw some chrome fittings from kraggen (90* elbow, 6" pipe 3in diameter, would i be able to mount the MAF sensor to the end of the 6" pipe?and then run the conectoin to the cone?
(i havent removed my MAF i dont wanna break it unless i have all the stuff to do this mod)
thanks

1. I have a 3" PVC elbow on the end of my rubber accordion deal. It's been there for 5 years now. No melting, no smelling. Your mileage may vary.

2. THe trouble with the MAF sensor is that it isn't a standard 3 inch or any standard inch or metric opening. Thats why I used rubber plumbing on either side. You'll just have to find something that works.

It was, and still is. Stock Cold Air dual snorkels. Unfortunately only came with Camaro's. Won't just drop in a Firebird though, we have less hood clearance. Its about an inch too tall.

Have a look at this one: He happens to have the exact same "rubber plumbing" that I was referring to.

Allright so about the MAF and it's size and all...

a 3" silicon connector will slip over and attach a pipe to the 'exit' side of the MAF.

You need a 3.5" for the entrance. I just connected the filter straight onto my MAF. Got it at AutoZone for $20-ish. You can buy ones that come with reducers so you can put it on a 4", 3.5" or a 3" piping.

Here's a pic of mine..

I know you said you don't want to break the MAF unless you know you can/need to. The angled end of it is just glued on. It came off pretty easily for me with a flathead and some prying. I just used some JB Weld to put it back on at the angle I needed. I ended up not changing it much but it has to be perfect if you still have the smog canister and the your filter is a tight fit like you can see, mine was.

Altogether my setup in the picture was about $50. Much cheaper than a brandname intake.

Dude, for the time it took you to type that message out, you could have answered his question... twice. There is no need to be a douche bag about new people asking question about their car. Nearly EVERY question has been asked (referring to performance gains), so if no question was to ever be asked again, this forum and many like it would die.

Yeah, he should have searched, but he didn't. Go ahead and let him know for next time that he should search, and then help him out.
